    • A color picture tube has an inline electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, comprising a center beam and two outer beams, along coplanar paths toward a screen of said tube. The three beams pass through a deflection zone adapted to have vertical and horizontal magnetic deflection fields established therein. The improvement comprises the inclusion of first means for weakening the effect of a portion of the horizontal magnetic deflection field on the center electron beam. Such means include elongated magnetic members located between the outer beams and the center beam with the direction of elongation being perpendicular to the plane of the electron beam paths. Also included are second means for weakening the effect of portions of both deflection fields on the two outer beams. The second means includes magnetic shield members completely surrounding each of the outer beam paths.

    • The three co-planar beams of an in-line gun are converged near the screen of a cathode ray tube by means of two plate-like grids transverse to the beam paths and having corresponding apertures for the three beams. The three beam apertures of the first grid are aligned with the three beam paths. The two outer beam apertures of the second grid are offset outwardly relative to the beam paths to produce the desired convergence. The three sets of apertures also provide separate focusing fields for the three beams. The second plate-like grid is formed with a barrel shape, concave toward the first grid, to minimize elliptical distortion of beam spots on the screen due to crowding of the adjacent focusing fields. Each of the two outer beams is partially shielded from the magnetic flux of the deflecting yoke by means of a magnetic ring surrounding the beam path in the deflection zone, to equalize the size of the rasters scanned on the screen by the middle and outer beams. Other magnetic pieces are positioned on opposite sides of the path of the middle beam, to enhance one deflection field while reducing the transverse deflection field for that beam.

    • Four magnetic pieces are provided inside the cup-shaped portion of a shield cup. Correction magnetic field generating faces at the tips of the magnetic pieces are opposed to each other and sandwich an electron beam. Correction can be conducted according to the astigmatism amount of three electron beams because a correction magnetic field corresponding to the strength of a deflection magnetic field can be generated easily by leading the deflection magnetic field absorbed by the principal face portion of each magnetic piece to the correction magnetic field generating face. Thus, the difference in astigmatism amount among the electron beams caused by the deflection magnetic field can be corrected. Therefore, a color cathode ray tube apparatus that can display images with a high resolution over the whole screen surface can be provided.
