    • A modular by-pass device of an electrical component includes a housing possessing a movable means of sealing, and is equipped with conducting terminals, one of whose ends is connected to one of the terminals of the electrical component circuit, the other end being fastened to the wall of the housing projecting into the interior of the housing and constituting a contact post. An actuator providing transposition between two positions of a control device include a plunger shaft and a spring arranged in the space formed between the plunger shaft and the internal wall of the housing. A trigger includes a retention device of the plunger shaft held in place by a fusible material. A reversing switch includes a contact zone providing electrical continuity between two contact posts of the terminals carried by the housing. The disclosed embodiments finds application more particularly in the isolation and short-circuiting of a battery element, which has become defective.

    • A user adjustable switching controller for duty cycle regulating flow of current to an electrical load such as a resistance heater, particularly for cooking appliances. A load current switch, when closed by a user operated cam also energizes a heat motor which includes a resistive strip attached to one active leg of a U-shaped bi-metal member. In one embodiment the integrally formed load current switch snap spring is securely attached to the heated leg of a U-shaped bi-metal and the moveable contact arm pivoted on the base. The other leg of the U-shaped bi-metal is anchored to a base including one of the load-connecting stationary terminals; and, the anchored leg serves to provide ambient temperature compensation. In another embodiment, the integrally formed blade spring of the moveable contact member is pivoted on the active leg of the U-shaped bi-metal and the moveable contact arm welded to the base. User rotation of the cam deflects a bias spring which acts on the portion of the bi-metal attached to the load switch snap spring to effect closing of the load current switch and energization of the heat motor. Heating of the bi-metal causes warpage which overcomes the bias spring to open the load switch and shut off the heat motor. Cooling of the bi-metal allows the load current switch to re-close repeating the cycle. User adjustment of the cam varies the bias on the snap spring and thus the re-open point of the switch with respect to the cycle, thereby varying the ratio of "on" to "off" time of the load current. The heat motor sub-assembly including the base with the load connecting terminal, the U-shaped bi-metal, the heater and the moveable contact arm and heater connecting chip is pre-fabricated and installed in the controller housing as a unit.

    • An adjustable bimetal snap disc thermostat is disclosed in which a leaf spring acts at its center to apply a force to a bimetal snap disc to alter the operating temperature thereof. The force of the spring applied to the disc is adjusted by an operating member which simultaneously moves both ends of the spring with respect to its center. The operating member is located on the side of the thermostat switch remote from the disc and is provided with projections which extend around opposite sides of the switch to the spring. With this structural arrangement, small adjustment travels are required for a given adjusting spring and the thermostat is constructed in a compact manner, which is symmetrical about the center axis of the device.

    • A condition-responsive electric switch mechanism for use in controlling a compressor of a refrigeration appliance. The switch mechanism includes first, second and third terminals, an actuator movable as a function of a detected condition and a bistable spring switch element electrically connected to the first terminal. The spring switch element includes a movable contact and is adapted for snap-acting movement between an open and a closed position. In the open position, the movable contact of the spring switch element is spaced apart from a fixed contact mounted on the second terminal. In the closed position, the movable contact engages the fixed contact to electrically connect the first and second terminals. The spring switch element also includes a toggle blade operable by engagement with the actuator for motion through a first switch point. At the first switch point, the spring switch element snaps between the open and closed positions. The toggle blade is operable by further engagement with the actuator for motion past the first switch point to a second switch point. At the second switch point, the toggle blade electrical connects the first and third terminals to enable an alarm.

    • This invention relates to a three-phase thermal protector having two pairs of fixed and movable contacts for opening and closing the neutral of wye-connected phase windings of a three-phase induction motor. The protector further includes a header plate having two terminal pins secured by an insulating sealant material respectively, a support plate secured to the header plate, an elastic member disposed so as to be approximately parallel to the support plate, the elastic member having two ends, one of which is secured to the support plate, a thermally responsive element secured at one end thereof to the other end of the elastic member, the thermally responsive element carrying the movable contacts and moving and returning with snap action in response to temperature change, a pivot mounted on a stationary member either at the header plate side or at the support plate side so that the surface of connecting portions of the thermally responsive element and the elastic member is engaged therewith, and an operative temperature calibrating mechanism provided on the support plate for exerting a contact pressure between the movable and fixed contacts.
