    • The electrostatic pick-up system is used for deriving signals which represent video program information stored on a video disc and are suitable for application to a television receiver to reproduce the video program. The pick-up itself has an increased bearing or tracking surface, leading to longer life and may be constructed to track within a single record groove or, alternatively, may bridge across and couple to a series of such grooves for radial tracking while presenting a probe in proper sensing relation to the groove that is to be sensed in any particular revolution of the disc. A generally similar arrangement omits mechanical coupling of the pick-up to the disc and, in its place, uses an electrical system to maintain radial tracking. This last-mentionend embodiment permits both stop frame and slow motion or other variable speed presentation of the image information stored in the disc.

    • An improved information storage and recovery system comprising a playback stylus, having a dielectric support element and a conductive electrode, and a grooved conductive disc record in which information is recorded. The information is recovered on playback while there is relative motion between the record surface and the stylus by sensing capacitive variations between the stylus conductive electrode and the record surface. The improvement comprises employing that angle between the electrode face and the record surface such that the respective paths of dielectric effects between the electrode face and the record surface both in the direction of relative motion and in the direction opposite the direction of relative motion are balanced.

    • A method and apparatus for reading data bits stored on a storage medium is provided. The apparatus comprises a data probe structure including a data probe and at least one switch attached to the data probe, a controllable voltage source configured to supply voltage to the data probe structure, and a charge amplification structure configured to receive charge from the data probe structure. The controllable voltage source applies a first voltage to the data probe structure and subsequently applies a second voltage to the data probe structure, thereby causing a sense capacitance to charge and then discharge into the charge amplification structure. Certain embodiments of the design may employ dummy cells, diodes in place of switches, and may use a single line to control voltage switching. A lock-in amplifier approach is also presented.

    • A photoconductive film reader comprises a disc with a read head attached to its bottom surface at an edge point and rotated over the photoconductive film at a sufficiently high velocity so that the read head floats aerodynamically on the film, the read head having means for sensing the information stored as electrostatic charge on the film. The film has a reset strip of a predetermined amount of charge prerecorded along one of its edges, resetting of the read head electronics being coincident with the passage of the read head over the reset strip. The floatation of the read head on the film reduces the effect of film modulations on the film-to-read head spacing and allows the spacing to be well defined and controllable.

    • A system for measuring shoe length of a stylus adapted to track a path along a surface of a video disc comprises positioning the tip of the stylus adjacent the surface of a substrate having a signal therein for effecting capacitive variations between the stylus and the substrate, and measuring the capacitive variations between the stylus and the substrate while they are oriented in a first position to obtain a first signal. The stylus is then tilted an angle of .theta. degrees relative to the substrate, whereby the stylus and substrate are oriented in a second position relative to each other. The capacitive variations are measured while the stylus and substrate are oriented in the second position to obtain a second signal. The first signal is then compared with the second signal to obtain a difference signal proportional to the shoe length of the stylus.
