    • In order to effect repeated reworking of a body, whose tip, during use, engages a record carrier track to guide a playback or recording member along the track, the reworking involving subjecting the body to successive reworking operations after successive periods of use, the tip of the body being worn down to a certain extent during each period of use and material being removed from the tip to restore its original shape during each reworking operation, the useful life of the body is effectively increased by adjusting the maximum removal depth occurring during each successive reworking operation as a function of the depth to which the tip is worn during the corresponding preceding period of use.

    • In a playback system employing a stylus to recover recorded signals from a video disc when relative motion between the disc and the stylus is established, a rotary stylus cleaner is provided. A freely pivoted, light stylus-arm carrying the stylus is mounted in a housing employed for movement of the stylus between a rest position and a play position. A rotary brush having an axis of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus-arm, is located in the path of movement of the stylus between the rest position and the play position. A friction wheel mounted on the axle carrying the rotatable brush, engages the turntable and causes rotation of the brush as the stylus threads through the brush during its travel between the rest position and the play position. A comb having its teeth in engagement with the bristles of the brush is secured to the board for the purpose of cleaning the brush.

    • A system for positioning a body having two opposed edges and having a first axis oriented to pass through the two edges. A beam of light oriented along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis images one or both of the edges onto all or a portion of a photodetector array which is aligned in a direction parallel to the first axis. The array is scanned to obtain a light intensity transition profile of all or part of the projected image whereby the profile has either one or two 50% intensity points. The body is then shifted until both of the 50% intensity points strike predetermined locations on the array indicating that both the edges are included in the image. The body is shifted along the first axis until the fifty percent (50%) intensity point along the transition profile strikes a predetermined location along the photodetector array. The body is also moved along the second axis until the slope of the intensity transition profile is maximized, thereby obtaining an in-focus position. The body is then translated along a third axis, substantially orthogonal to the first and the second axes, until the minimum in the intensity transition profile drops to a predetermined percent of the full intensity value.

    • Apparatus for sharpening a diamond cutting stylus for use in recording video signal information in a metal master includes a source of high energy particles such as an ion milling machine. The high energy source provides a beam of high energy particles having a cross-sectional area perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the beam that is large compared to a given area on a mounting face of the stylus which is to be bombarded by the beam during the sharpening operation. Further, the apparatus includes a masking block for masking a first portion of the cutting stylus. The masking block is positioned with respect to the high energy source to intercept the particles in the beam directed at the first portion of the cutting stylus. A second portion of the cutting stylus which includes the given area is exposed to the high energy particles such that the second portion of the cutting stylus is removed.
