    • A monitoring apparatus which has a plurality of encoders for installation at respective outlying stations, a decoder for installation at a central station and a portable memory module to be carried by a person whose visits to the outlying stations are to be monitored. Each encoder includes a particular configuration of permanent magnets which provides it with its own predetermined magnetic code for identifying the station at which it is installed. This code, in the case of each encoder, is read out and converted to a corresponding binary electric pulse code with the aid of reed switches in the portable memory module, the switches being operated by the fields of respective ones of the encoder magnets when the module is interfaced with the encoder, the electric pulses being inputted to a shift register which is also in the module and which electronically stores the pulse code. After the last of the outlying stations has been visited and the pulse codes thereof have been serially stored in the shift register, the codes are transferred by electromagnetic induction to a binary-to-decimal converter in the decoder upon interfacing the memory module with the decoder, the transfer being initiated by the operation of an additional reed switch in the module by a permanent magnet in the decoder. A visual display device, also in the decoder, is actuated by the output of the converter to indicate whether or not the visits being monitored were in fact made.

    • A magnetic sensor device includes magnetic detection elements arrayed along a line intersecting the relative movement direction of a medium, and a magnet applying a bias magnetic field to the magnetic detection elements with a line of magnetic force in the constant direction. The magnetic sensor device detects a magnetic field change when a medium with a magnetic pattern passes through the bias magnetic field as an electric signal through the magnetic detection elements and reads the magnetic pattern of the medium. A plurality of reading switches is connected to the respective magnetic detection elements and an output line common to the magnetic detection elements. The magnetic sensor device includes a shift register closing the reading switches sequentially one by one to transfer the outputs from the magnetic detection elements sequentially one by one to the output line.

    • A punched card reader for use in systems such as bulk fuel terminal dispensing systems, automated unattended bank teller machines and the like includes security provisions to prevent operation of such systems by counterfeit cards. Specifically, the system operates with a punched card made of laminated plastic or the like having a rectangular plate made of magnetic material sandwiched between the card layers. This plate is located in an area of the card adjacent the portion encoded with the variable data uniquely identifying the card and the controlling its function, etc. The card entry throat of the tape reader is modified to have a pair of spaced-apart, magnetically actuated reed switches on one side of the card entry slot. On the opposite side of the card entry slot a pair of corresponding permanent magnets are located. The magnets have a field strength sufficient to operate the magnetic reed switches; so that when no card is inserted into the reader, or when a card not having the magnetic shield in it is inserted into the reader, the reader cannot operate. When a card having the magnetic shield in it is inserted fully into the reading position of the reader, the magnetic shield breaks the magnetic field used to actuate the reed switches, and they change operating state. This state of operation is used in a control circuit, along with the conventional card sensing switch, to enable the reader for operation.
