    • Embodiments of a computer-implemented method for thin-line enhancement in electronic images are disclosed. The methods include receiving a halftone image comprising multiple pixels, and associating a predefined kernel with at least a portion of the halftone image. The kernel includes multiple check cells and a processing cell, each capable of being toggled between an active state and an inactive state; detecting a state of each of the pixels in the neighborhood of an inactive pixel associated with the processing cell based on one or more predetermined rules being applied to the kernel, wherein the inactive pixel is in communication with a contiguous set of active pixels; and selectively activating the inactive pixel by activating the processing cell based on the predetermined rules, provided the inactive pixel upon being activated is separated from a neighboring active pixel.

    • A method for printing low-resolution digital image data received from a host computer on a digital printer, comprising: receiving low-resolution image data; receiving mask image data, wherein the mask image data is formed by automatically analyzing the full-resolution image data or the low-resolution image data, the mask image data providing an indication of image regions in the low resolution image data that would benefit from the application of an anti-aliasing algorithm; using a data processor in the digital printer to resize the low-resolution image data, forming high-resolution image data at a higher resolution than the low-resolution image data; using the data processor in the digital printer to apply an anti-aliasing method to portions of the high-resolution image data corresponding to the indicated image regions in the mask image data, thereby providing anti-aliased image data; and printing the anti-aliased image data on the digital printer.

    • A methodology for thin line detection and enhancement in electronic images is disclosed. The methodology includes associating an electronic image with at least one basic context window that is less than the size of the electronic image based on the input image resolution of the electronic image; detecting one or more predefined patterns which correspond to thin lines in the electronic image using the at least one basic context window; excluding patterns for the one or more detected patterns which are halftone patterns; and adding at least one pixel to the electronic image based on at least one of the remaining patterns so as to enhance thin line features in the electronic image. In some implementation, the methodology may be configured to handle electronic images having different resolutions. A system for thin line detection and enhancement in electronic images having different resolutions is also disclosed.

    • A system for performing edge enhancement of mixed low resolution image files employs a binarization and sorting unit to sort data that is indicative of binary data from the mixed low resolution image input file. The sorted binary data is then supplied to a binary data edge enhancement processor for edge enhancement processing. The output from the binary data edge enhancement processor unit is supplied to a data merger unit along with the original image data. The data merger unit determines whether the original image data was part of a gray-scale image. If the data merger determines the original data is part of a gray-scale image, the original data is supplied as the output of the processing system. If the data merger determines that the original data is binary image data, the output from the binary edge enhancement processor unit is supplied as the output of the processing system.
