The standard communication protocol for process control can be OPC, and the communicated information can be one or more process control parameters.

The control system includes objects and a plurality of access servers, which said objects represent various entities that have a defined functional meaning in the control system. Each access server, such as an OPC server, may provide access to one or more real-time data, historical data, and alarm and event data items. In an embodiment the method provides means, which enables the Access Service Handler (2) component, by querying a said object, to obtain a reference for a desired data item, to find out which access server handles the said data item. 摘要： An OPC redirection manager maintains the information necessary for taking appropriate action when the target OPC server fails and for ensuring that no bad status is returned to the client. Any existing OPC client needing seamless failover between target OPC data access and/or alarm and event servers will connect to a uniquely configured instance of the redirection manager instead of connecting to the primary server. The client application continues to perform OPC related tasks as usual. Because each client connection is unique, the redirection manager itself is not a single point of failure. Each configured redirection manager instance monitors the health of the target server mode and the target server itself by subscribing to failure events.

The method comprises arranging, for the client device, at least two parallel logical connections for transferring substantially the same data between at least one data source and the client device. At the client device, property information on data units transferred via different logical connections is checked, the client device being provided with predetermined order criteria for the property information. At the client device, property information on parallel data units transferred via different logical connections is compared. Data units delivered via the logical connection having, according to the predetermined order criteria, the best property information are selected for the use of one or more applications processing the data units.
