    • Electrographic stylus recording apparatus for producing a magnetically attractable toner powder image on a receptor belt including two rotatable cylindrical sleeves, each having a non-rotatable magnetic roll, with one sleeve positioned adjacent the upstream side of a stylus array and the other sleeve adjacent the downstream side with each of such sleeves adapted for connection to a d.c. source, the upstream sleeve being connected to a d.c. source to place toner powder on the receptor belt for delivery of toner powder to the stylus array when a toner image is to be made and the downstream sleeve being connected to a d.c. source to place toner powder on the receptor belt from such sleeve for return to the upstream side of the stylus array via the receptor belt. The magnet rolls within the sleeves are positioned to provide like magnetic poles to the stylus array to provide a magnetic flux at the recording ends of the styli in the array. Each of the magnetic rolls also provide a magnetic pole to the receptor belt at the point where the sleeves are closest to the receptor belt.

    • A novel image development method and apparatus, wherein an imaging member having an imaging surface is provided with a layer of marking material thereon, and an electrostatic latent image is created in the layer of marking material. Image-wise charging of the layer of marking material is accomplished by a wide beam ion source such that free mobile ions are introduced in the vicinity of an electrostatic latent image associated with the imaging member having the layer of marking material coated thereon. The latent image associated with the imaging member causes the free mobile ions to flow in an image-wise ion stream corresponding to the latent image, which, in turn, leads to image-wise charging of the toner layer, such that the toner layer itself becomes the latent image carrier. The latent image carrying toner layer is subsequently developed and transferred to a copy substrate to produce an output document.

    • An improved electrographic stylus recording apparatus wherein magnetically attractable toner powder used during imaging, but not forming a part of a toner image, is returned from one side of a stylus array to the toner powder hopper of the apparatus. The toner powder is transported around the stylus array by the use of fixed magnets disposed within two rotatable cylindrical sleeve members disposed on opposite sides of the stylus array. A further cylindrical sleeve member having a rotatable magnetic field producing means within the sleeve attracts toner powder from the cylindrical sleeve disposed on the toner powder hopper side of the stylus array for delivery to the toner powder hopper.

    • An electrographic method and apparatus are provided for maintaining a controlled quantity of electronically conductive toner in the recording region formed between an array of stylus electrodes and a receptor recording member. A regular or relatively uniform supply of toner is provided to said recording region where a temporally constant force is presented which acts on the toner to establish an electronically conductive path via the toner between the electrodes and the recording member. Recording electrical potential signals selectively applied to the first electrodes relative to the recording member cause toner to be deposited on the recording member as image toner. A toner removal means provides a temporally constant force for removing excess accumulated toner from said recording gap to a point where it is out of electronic contact with the toner at the recording gap. Non-image toner removal means positioned at a point remote from the recording region is also disclosed.
