    • A backlight module and a flat panel display using the same. The backlight module comprises a light source device and light guide plate adjacent to the light source device. The light source device comprises a high intensity discharge lamp, a reflector having an opening and surrounding the high intensity discharge lamp, and a cover covering the opening. The high intensity discharge lamp radiates so brilliant that it can be a single light source. When single light source is failed, it is convenient to solely exchange a new one at once. The flat panel display comprises the backlight module and a display panel disposed over the light guide plate. The light source device and the light guide plate are applied to the flat panel display so that the replacement of the light source device for the flat panel display becomes convenient.

    • To replace an old lamp unit, first, resilient projections are pushed outward through engaging holes of a resin frame with some tool and the lamp unit is pulled out through a lamp unit guide hole. Then, a new lamp unit is inserted with the resilient projections deformed to the lamp side by utilizing their resiliency. When the lamp unit is inserted to the regular position, the projections are opposed to the respective engaging holes of the resin frame and return to their original shapes because of their resiliency to go into the respective holes. As a result, the lamp unit is positioned with respect to the resin frame and fixed to the latter. Even when external impact acts on the liquid crystal display device, the lamp unit does not fall off.

    • Xenon light emitted from a xenon light source heads for a wavelength-selecting mirror through a taper coupler and an air mass filter. The wavelength-selecting mirror reflects a short wavelength component of the xenon light and emits the short wavelength component to a taper member. Halogen light emitted from a halogen light source heads for a wavelength-selecting mirror through a taper coupler and a reflecting mirror. The wavelength-selecting mirror transmits a long wavelength component of the halogen light and emits the long wavelength component to the taper member. The taper member has width gradually decreasing from an entrance plane for light to an exit plane for the light. The light emitted from the taper member is changed so that a radiation directivity of a component originating from the xenon light becomes similar to a radiation directivity of a component originating from the halogen light. This makes it possible to provide a solar simulator performing irradiation of artificial sunlight having uniform illumination distribution onto an irradiation-target surface.

    • In a lamp unit (1), a conductive section (2) is formed by directly extending a layer structure of a reflective member (42) from (i) one end of a square U-shape of a part of the reflective member (42) that is closest to a power feeding section for feeding power to the lamp unit (1) toward (ii) a light emission side of the lamp unit (1) and further folding back the extended portion 180 degrees in a direction opposite to the direction that it extends from the reflective member (42). The conductive section (2) is provided with a screw hole (2a) through which the reflective member is connected to another object. This achieves a lamp unit in which, even if a reflective member is fixed to another object with a screw for conduction with an external conductor, a reflective layer is less likely to peel off.
