    • Coolant flow (900) in the core (103) of a natural circulation boiling water reactor (100) is monitored by making use of a detector (208) for nuclear radiation and a turbine device (204) which comprises a rotor (304) which can modulate the flux (206) of the nuclear radiation on the detector. The turbine rotor can be installed in a fuel bundle (104), while the detector can be placed in an adjoining instrumentation tube (320). Included in the turbine rotor is material (308) which modulates the radiation field (neutron field and/or gamma field). The radiation detector detects (602) variations in the radiation field when the turbine rotor device is set into rotation by the coolant flow (900). The coolant flow rate is then calculated (603) from the speed of these variations.

    • The flow meter has in a substantially cylindrical inner housing (1) a helically designed diffuser (4), which imparts a swirl to the medium flowing through the inner housing. Downstream of the diffuser there is rotatably mounted a rotor (8), which has blades (13) extending from its rotational spindle (9) as well as a ring (14) which connects the blade ends to one another and is coaxial to the spindle. The rotor (8) is set in rotation by impingement of the blades (13) by the flowing medium. On the outer circumferential surface (15) of the ring (11) there is on a circular line a multiplicity of markings (16) arranged at equal angular intervals from one another. Through a window (18) in the inner housing (1), a light beam strikes the outer circumferential surface (15) of the ring (14), provided with the markings (16). Upon rotation of the rotor (8), the sequence of markings is transmitted by an optical-fibre cable (20) and sensed by a sensor (21), so that from the signals received the flow rate can be determined. The flow meter has the advantage that the medium to be measured does not have to be transparent as in the application of the light barrier and that the multiplicity of markings allows an increase in the measuring accuracy.

    • An electronic flowmeter system including a turbine flowmeter and a digital controller for making highly accurate flow measurements over a wide range of fluid flows and pressures is disclosed. The flowmeter preferably includes a body having a cylindrical bore in which is mounted a turbine having multiple vanes which rotate transversely to the direction of fluid flow. The clearance between the bore and vanes is selected for minimum resistance to fluid flow at extremely low flow rates. Rotation of the turbine vanes is detected by use of a proximity sensor or an optical sensor employing an artificial light and a photodetector. Flow measurements are made by digitally measuring the time periods between successive input pulses generated by detection of the rotating vanes of the turbine. For high temperature or intrinsically safe applications, the optical sensor is used with a fiber optic cable so that the light source and photodetector can be located remotely from the flowmeter. For high pressure applications and applications involving flow measurements of chemically active fluids, a sensor housing including a stainless steel casing and a protective glass window at one end of the centrally-located hole passing through the casing is used.

    • A transducer includes a lamp producing a light beam and a photodetector for sensing the light beam. A turbine in the vehicle fuel line rotates at a rate proportional to fuel usage and carries a shutter having a wide opening for intermittently interrupting the light beam. A second shutter driven according to vehicle speed includes a plurality of teeth for interrupting the light beam at a frequency proportional to vehicle speed. The resulting signal from the photodetector is a series of pulses arranged by groups wherein the number of pulses in each group is proportional to the distance traveled by the vehicle per unit of fuel consumption, e.g. miles per gallon.
