    • A magnetic bearing device includes an electromagnet for supporting a member without contact; an excitation amplifier for supplying an excitation current to the electromagnet; a carrier wave generation device for generating a carrier wave; and a sensor device for modulating the carrier wave to output a sensor signal according to a position of the member. An A/D conversion device converts the sensor signal to a digital value, and a demodulation calculation device demodulates through a digital calculation process according to the sensor signal converted to the digital value. A control device controls the excitation amplifier according to a calculation result of the demodulation calculation device.

    • A device for measuring a clearance between tips of blades of a ring of blades and an interior wall of a casing surrounding the ring of blades in a turbomachine includes a probe which is mounted radially on the casing. The probe has an end made of a material that can be abraded by the tips of blades as they rotate. The device also includes a printed circuit arranged in a mid-plane of the probe. The probe contains an axis of rotation of the ring of blades. Further, the printed circuit includes a number of adjacent U-shaped electrical circuits that have bases arranged in a probe end likely to be abraded by the tips of blades. The bases lie at different depths from a reference level defining the interior wall of casing. The printed circuit also includes a recognizer for determining which U-shaped electrical circuits have been broken by abrasion and which U-shaped electrical circuits are intact.

    • In an active magnetic bearing system employing radial or thrust bearings, rotor shaft position is determined without requiring air gap position sensors, resulting in a high reliability system. The flux paths for each respective electromagnetic force actuator of the active magnetic bearing are isolated in order to minimize the magnetic coupling therebetween. The active magnetic bearing system is controlled for mutually exclusive excitation of each of the two actuators (e.g., stator pole pairs) per control axis. A sequence of test voltage pulses is applied to the unexcited one of each actuator pole-pair. At the peak of an applied test voltage pulse, after a predetermined time interval, the pole flux linkage is estimated using either an analog or software integrator. The integrator is reset at zero current, and hence zero flux, thereby avoiding accumulation of errors. The effective air gap length is determined from the inherent magnetization characteristic of the magnetic bearing using the measured current and the estimated flux linkage. Effectively, each magnetic pole is used alternately for force actuation and for inductive feedback sensing, eliminating the need for separate position sensors.

    • The diametral clearance of an aperture of a bearing is measured by an apparatus which includes a mounting for placing both the bearing and an associate pivot in axial relation with each other along an axis of alignment and positioning devices for positioning the pivot in relation to the bearing. The positioning devices include axial direction positioning devices for adjusting the pivot in each of two mutually perpendicular axial directions transverse to the axis of alignment to locate an approximate center of bearing clearance and for adjusting the pivot from the approximate center of bearing clearance in each of the mutually perpendicular axial directions until the pivot displaces the bearing in the corresponding direction. Also included are gaging devices for measuring any movement of both the bearing and pivot in each of the mutually perpendicular axial directions, and an indicator for indicating any axial movement of the bearing and the pivot while the positioning devices adjust the pivot in each of the two mutually perpendicular axial directions.
