    • The present invention is a flexible, fillable and/or inflatable breach bag (aqua ram) with a planar body and at least one fillable water chamber for use in breaching locked or barricaded doors or penetrating surfaces with explosive charges. The breach bag may conform to a variety of shapes, depending on the application. The bag generally includes a generally planar panel of flexible material and at least one water chamber disposed on the material layer with a fluid inlet for the selective introduction of fill material, generally in the field. Additionally, the bags include means to suspend the breach bag against structures to be breached.

    • An improved process is provided for blasting in situ oil shale retorts, and oil and gas wells. In the process, a specially formed concrete plug is installed at a desired depth in a bottomless blast hole and an explosive charge is placed upon the plug and detonated to blast the underground formation. The plug is accurately and reliably set by lowering a canister, which releasably houses a bag support assembly supporting a bag of concrete slurry, to a desired depth into the blast hole. The bag support assembly and bag of wet concrete are subsequently dropped a fixed distance below the canister. The bag of concrete expands, dries, and hardens against the walls of the blast hole to form a permanent stationary plug across the blast hole. In the preferred process, the bag support assembly is formed by casting a concrete disc around a drainpipe, and the bag support assembly is lowered and released from the canister with the aid of an electrically powered sequencer.

    • A cartridge (10) is provided having a receptacle (12) with propellant (14) therein and an open end with a stemming device (16) secured to the open end to form a substantially closed container.     • A self-supporting air tube for blasting and method of blasting rock using the air tube. The air tube includes an air bladder, a pair of support wings and an inlet The air bladder has a diameter smaller than that of a blasting hole and extends longitudinally. The support wings extend from the outside of the air bladder symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the air bladder so as to surround the air bladder and have certain widths. The inlet is attached to the upper fusion-welded portion of the air bladder to inject air into the air bladder. The total diameter of the air tube is smaller than the diameter of the blasting hole, and the air tube is inserted into the blasting hole and self-supported on a wall of the blasting hole.

    • An explosive or stemming package is provided which is self-retaining in vertical or inclined up-holes in stable rock. The package containing a flowable material, for example, slurry explosives, consists of a thin-walled cylindrical bag having at least one longitudinal, external pleat held closed by means of an adhered overcovering or tape. With the package held in position in the up-hole by a push rod, the tape is severed by means of a rip cord allowing the pleat to open. The slumping contents press the package closely against the borehole wall for secure retention without additional support. Improved coupling of the explosive charge to the rock is also provided giving enhanced blasting efficiency.

    • A self compacting explosive cartridge for use in bore-holes. The cartridge is formed from rigid, upper and lower telescoping tubes which extend centrally through a larger diameter sleeve of flexible material. Prilled ammonium nitrate fills the annular space between the tubes and the sleeve; the upper tube is filled with diesel fuel and the lower tube contains a detonator. When remotely activated by a signal, compressive means included in the cartridge telescope the tubes together which foreshortens the cartridge and displaces the fuel from the upper tube into the ammonium nitrate causing the two chemicals to combine to form an explosive mixture. The foreshortening or setting of the apparatus compacts the explosive material in the bore-hole. The preferred form of the invention obtains the force for setting the cartridge from a stretched outer sleeve of resilient material. A modified form of the invention supplies the setting force with a tension coil spring concentrically disposed about the telescoping tubes. Another modification supplies the setting force with stretched rubber bands which connect the two ends of the cartridge to each other.
