    • The invention provides a heat exchanger mat, comprising a twin-duct manifold having a duct member comprised of an inlet duct and an outlet duct, a tube-socket member fixedly and fluid-tightly attached to the duct member, and a return manifold having a deflector member and a tube-socket member fixedly and fluid-tightly attached to one another. The mat also includes a plurality of tubes for circulation of a heat-exchanging liquid medium, each tube fixedly and fluid-tightly joined at one of its ends to the tube-socket member of the twin-duct manifold and at the other one of its ends to the tube-socket member of the return manifold. One end of each odd-numbered one of the tubes communicates via at least one aperture with one of the twin ducts, and one end of each even-numbered one of the tubes communicates via at least one other aperture with the other one of the twin ducts, and the other ends of all of the tubes communicate with the return manifold.

    • A solar heating panel is constructed from a kit of parts which essentially comprises a number of absorber plate sections, each of which has on one edge an outwardly-facing concave part-cylindrical portion, the concave surface of which has a radius of curvature equal to the radius of curvature of the outside circumferential surface of the tubes which will carry the water to be heated through the panel. In the embodiment described, the part-cylindrical portions on the absorber plate sections are clamped with their concave surfaces in heat-conducting contact with the outer surfaces of the tubes by spring clips which are readily snapped over the convex surfaces of adjacent absorber plate sections. The heat-conducting contact between the concave surfaces on the part-cylindrical portions of the absorber plates and the outer surfaces of the tubes may be either an intimate surface contact between essentially smooth surfaces, or it may be a contact through a film of a heat-conductive paste which ensures a substantial exclusion of air or moisture from between the two curved surfaces.

    • A solar energy collector panel, having an absorber plate and a frame within which the absorber plate is mounted. The absorber plate is comprised of a plurality of absorber plate sections each having interlocking structure formed along both of their lateral edges. This interlocking structure forms a tubular passage when the interlocking structure of the adjacent absorber plate sections are matingly locked together. An elongated tubing member whose external diameter is slightly larger than the internal diameter of the tubular passage is frictionally captured within each of the tubular passages. The absorber plate sections are formed of extruded metal and they have a plurality of corrugated surface portions that provide the absorber plate sections with greater surface exposure and improved absorption angles to the sun throughout the day. The thickness of the absorber plate sections is the greatest where the interlocking structure of the adjacent absorber plate sections are matingly locked together, thereby providing a greater mass for heat conduction transfer from the absorber plate sections to the elongated tubing member. The interlocking structure formed on the lateral edges of the absorber plate sections comprise a fin portion whose configuration is basically that of a cylindrical tube that has been cut in half longitudinally. A recess is formed adjacent one edge of the fin portion and a protrusion is formed adjacent the opposite edge of the fin portion. The frame has a back plate, side frame members, end frame members, and a glass top panel.

    • The invention involves solar energy collecting units and a system for mounting such units on a support surface. Each unit has a solar radiation collecting panel through which a heat transferring fluid such as water can pass. Each panel can be connected to the panel of adjacent units so that the heat transferring fluid can pass among a series of units as it is being heated. A tapered fluid inlet manifold is provided at one end of the solar collecting panel with a similar tapered fluid outlet manifold at the opposite end. An inlet tube is in communication with the inlet manifold and an outlet tube is in communication with the outlet manifold. Male-female couplings are provided about the respective inlet and outlet tubes so that adjacent solar collecting units can be easily and quickly connected. The tapered manifolds allow the fluid to drain quickly and completely out of whichever end of the collector panel is lower when the panel is not in use. A unique system for coupling the inlet and outlet tubes is provided to allow for expansion and contraction of the units during radical temperature fluctuations. Each solar collecting unit is mounted by flange members extending along the sides of the unit and separate longitudinal clamps to mounting rails aligned in parallel relationship on the supporting surface. The unique mounting system of the invention secures a plurality of the units onto the supporting surface to form an efficient solar energy collecting system. Each unit weighs about the same as standard roofing and the assembly of the units will completely cover and protect the supporting surface.
