    • A method of in-situ pipeline replacement in which valves, fittings, and other obstructions are removed from an existing pipeline, a heat-fusible polymer pipeline having an initially deformed configuration less than the existing pipeline diameter is inserted into the remaining portions of the existing pipeline and reformed to substantially conform to the inside diameter of the existing pipeline, heat-fusible fittings are provided to replace removed portions of the existing pipeline and heat-fused to the polymer liner, and transition fittings provided to operably connect the replacement pipeline to those portions of the existing pipeline not within the replacement scope. The completed replacement polymer pipeline creates an operable wetted pressure boundary within the bounds of the replaced existing pipeline.

    • A method for cutting an opening in the side of a pipe carrying gas under pressure, providing a bypass through the cut, and terminating the bypass when the pipe has been repaired, and apparatus for performing steps of the method. A branching saddle is bonded to the pipe, and a fixture is mounted on the pipe at the saddle. The fixture comprise a barrel through which various tool-insertion assemblies may be inserted.The tool-insertion assemblies tyically include a shaft carrying a tool on one of its ends, a driving hub affixed near its opposite end, and a sealing plug slidably mounted axially on the shaft between the tool and the driving hub. The tools enter into the fixture's bore through a tool inlet, into which the sealing plug of the insertion assembly is screwed for a pressure-tight fit. The tools are individually inserted, in succession, through the fixture's bore and through the wall of the pipe. Lowering of the tools by means of the insertion assemblies into and out of the pressurized pipe is made possible by manipulation of a gate valve in the fixture, which allows the upper part of the bore to be depressurized prior to removal and during the insertion of different ones of the insertion assemblies.

    • Disclosed are methods and premade and/or prepositioned kits for bypassing damaged or blocked standpipes during fire or other emergencies to quickly restore water supply near the location of the fire. More specifically, an illustrative embodiment includes a method for bypassing a damaged standpipe during a fire emergency, comprising: identifying (a) the approximate location of said damage, (b) a first valve on said standpipe below said location, and (c) a second valve on said standpipe above said location; shutting the water supply to said standpipe; cutting a first section out of the standpipe immediately above said first valve, thereby leaving a first open section of standpipe above said first valve; cutting a second section out of the standpipe immediately below said second valve, thereby leaving a second open section of standpipe below said second valve; capping said first and second open sections; connecting flexible tubing from said first valve to said second valve; and restarting the water supply to said standpipe.

Another method of performing a servicing operation within a pipeline comprises inserting into the pipeline a pipeline tool comprising an externally mounted swellable component, propelling the pipeline tool through the pipeline to about a desired location via a flow of fluid, expanding the swellable component into sealing engagement with the pipeline at about the desired location, and opening a flow path through the pipeline tool.

    • A method of sealing a pipe and a device for sealing the pipe which prevents gas leakage out of a pipe stub plugged by a stopper disposed in a tee fitting, to allow a permanent cap to be welded onto the pipe. The device comprises an expandable plug comprising a pair of plates with a sealing member disposed between the plates. The plates can be squeezed together, for example by tightening nuts onto bolts extending through the plates to compress the sealing member and cause the periphery of the sealing member to expand against the inner wall of the pipe. Stabilizing means, for example a nut having a reverse thread and a complimentary tool, is provided for stabilizing the expandable plug radially within the pipe as the plates are squeezed together. The expandable plug is inserted into the pipe stub after the bypassed section of pipe has been removed, and lodged in the pipe by squeezing the plates together to expand the sealing member against the inner wall of the pipe stub. The cap is then welded onto the pipe stub.
