    • A shift assembly for a transfer cases, manual and semi-automatic transmissions comprises a drive motor having a worm gear output which engages and drives a gear having an eccentric drive pin disposed parallel to and offset from the axis of a rotation of the gear. The drive pin engages a slot in a shift fork which extends normal to the axis of movement of the shift fork and associated speed change or gear shift mechanism. The shift fork is disposed upon and supported by a shift rail. Uni-directional or bi-directional rotation of the drive motor rotates the gear and sequentially moves the eccentric pin, shift fork and shift mechanism between first and second terminal positions and, typically, a center or intermediate, neutral position.

    • A shift mechanism position sensor for a transfer case or transmission includes a plurality of Hall effect sensors disposed adjacent a ferrous, metallic plate having a plurality of apertures arranged to provide multi-bit binary signals in gray code. The metallic plate is secured to an internal component such as a shift control rod of the transfer case or transmission and translates bi-directionally adjacent the Hall effect sensors. Data coded in numerous distinct three or four bit binary numbers provides high resolution of the position of the shift mechanism, shift fork and associated clutch. Many four wheel drive motor vehicle transfer cases include a gear reduction assembly which provide direct and reduced speed drives. Such gear selection is often achieved by an electronic control system and it is important to provide information regarding the actual physical position of such gear selection mechanism to the control system. The Hall effect sensors and apertured plate are preferably disposed within the transfer case or transmission and provide accurate and well defined information to the control system.

    • In an electrically controlled shift actuator (110, 120, 130) and a control system (140) therefor of the type utilizing a cam or scotch yoke flywheel adapted to move a shift member (28, 96) to a preselected one of at least two spaced-apart shift positions. In one embodiment the shift member is in a preloaded condition provided by coiled spring (84) associated with the actuator. The control system employs a circuit having a control switch (100), a first switch (108), and a second switch (112) interconnectable in such a manner that a cam (70) responsive to the rotational position of the motor is able to change the condition of the first and second switching in a prescribed manner to move the shift member. The control system preferably includes energy dissipating resistor (120) for dynamically braking the motor and speed indicator (124) when the actuator is used as a shift actuator for a vehicle.

    • A torque-transmitting mechanism includes a spiral spring, an apply piston, and a rotating mechanism. The rotating mechanism is operative to rotate a member relative to the spiral spring to enforce linear movement of the spiral spring which results in linear movement of the apply piston to enforce engagement and disengagement of a torque-transmitting mechanism. The mechanism has two applications—interconnecting two rotating members, or connecting a rotating member to a ground member. The mechanism is employable in two systems. A motor drives the spiral spring with the rotation of the spring causing it to thread between stationary pins to move spring material to one side of the pins. The spiral spring pushes against the clutch plates. The motor drives the housing with pins and the spring is retained from rotating causing the spring to thread through the pins and drive the pins forward or backward. The housing presses against the clutch plates.
