    • A tensioning apparatus or device for a flexible driving means, particularly a drive chain for an internal combustion engine, comprises a housing, a tensioning piston movably guided in said housing and an adjusting or regulating means for gradually adjusting the working stroke of the tensioning piston. The adjusting means comprises a locking bracket and an appertaining locking profile at the tensioning piston, two arch-shaped clamping sections of said locking bracket being engageable with said locking profile, and a resilient spring portion with a torsional area combining the clamping sections in spring-resilient manner. In a preferred embodiment, the locking bracket comprises a U-shaped section with a portion angled towards the housing wall and forming the torsional area. The housing is further provided with a guide projection projecting from said housing wall for axially guiding said angled portion of said U-shaped section of said locking bracket in the working stroke of said tensioning piston in torsion-proof manner.

    • In a chain tensioner, an expansible ring is disposed in an internal groove formed in the inner wall of a plunger-accommodating hole near an open end thereof. The ring cooperates with grooves formed on the plunger to exert a ratchet action. The relationship between the angles of the surfaces of the internal groove and the grooves on the plunger allows the plunger to protrude, restricts retraction of the plunger on start-up of a chain transmission, but allows retraction when chain tension becomes excessive. In one embodiment, in which the ring is a C-ring, the tensioner housing can be formed with external threads for mounting in a threaded hole on a timing chain cover or other engine part. In other embodiments, the ring can have externally protruding levers for manipulation of the ring.

This chain tensioner has a tubular housing 1 having a bottom, a plunger 3 installed in the inner periphery 1a of the housing so as to smoothly slide inside the housing, a return spring 5 providing the plunger 3 with a force pushing outward, a plurality of latching grooves 33a–33d formed on the outer periphery of the plunger 3, a resister ring 7 capable of locking in the latching grooves, and a check valve 6 that is mounted on the bottom of the housing inner periphery 1a, provides the housing inner periphery 1a with operating oil and prevents its reverse flow. The range of backward movement of the plunger 3 is limited by mating the resister ring 7 locked in the latching grooves 33a–33d with a first stopper 21 formed on the housing inner periphery 1a.

The ramp section exerts an unlocking force on the spring arm over a travel path of the unlocking element relative to the tensioning piston, forcing said spring arm out of the transport groove.
