    • A torque coupler includes a first torque plate having a first slot extending in a radial direction, and a second torque plate having a second slot extending in the radial direction. The second slot has a side formed of a flexible beam. A cam plate is pivotable about an axis, and has a cam slot having a first portion at a first radial distance from the axis and a second portion at a second radial distance, where the second distance is greater than the first distance. A torque transfer member is slidably received within the first slot, the second slot, and the cam slot. The transfer member transferring torque between the first and second torque plates. A drive device rotates the cam plate about the axis, which causes the first cam slot to radially slide the transfer member along the flexible beam.

    • A coupling connects a drive part with a driven part. One of the parts are formed with axially extending coupling formations. The coupling has a one-piece plastic body formed with a central hub formed with axially extending coupling formations complementary to the formations of the one part and fitted axially to the one part and with a plurality of connection regions projecting radially from the hub securable to the other of the parts. Each of the connection regions is formed with an axially throughgoing hole. The coupling further has respective metallic elements fitted in the holes and each fixed to the other part. These elements fit with play in the respective holes. Formations on the elements and on the connection regions secure the elements in the connection regions against displacement out of the connection regions in either of two axially opposite directions prior to fixing of the elements to the other part.

    • Torque shock peaks when an automatic transmission shifts gears. A method of reducing this torque shock to prolong the life of engines, transmissions, and the entire power train in vehicles and heavy equipment most generally comprises the steps of transmitting rotational power through a torque shock absorber having a generally cylindrical housing adapted for attachment to a drive on one cylindrical end and to a driven shaft on the other cylindrical end. Thereby peak torque loads transmitted through the torque shock absorber are reduced. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the torque shock absorber comprises a housing having peripheral spaced bolts therethrough. Bolt openings therein are surrounded by a rubber bushing in the housing so that when the torque shock absorber is bolted to a driven flange peak torque loads are absorbed by the rubber bushings. The most preferred placement for the torque shock absorber in the power train is between an engine and an automatic transmission.

The elastomeric elements comprise two regions having different properties. The first region, which extends radially and is held in the pockets of the first coupling section via its ends, is more inherently stable than is the second region for the transmission of a peripheral force. The second region, which respectively faces one of the projections of the second coupling section, is more yielding than is the first region such that deformations can be introduced into the second region with the effect of a slight restoring force.
