    • An image forming apparatus includes a process unit detachably mountable to a main assembly of the apparatus, the process unit including an image bearing member for bearing an electrostatic image and a process unit actable on the image bearing member, the process unit having a rotational shaft; a driving shaft, substantially co-axial with the rotational shaft, for rotating the rotational shaft; and a drive transmitting member, engaged with the driving shaft and with the rotational shaft, for transmitting a driving force to the rotational shaft from the driving shaft. The drive transmitting member is engaged with the driving shaft with play and is engaged with the rotational shaft with play.

    • A Hookes universal joint assembly which, in a preferred embodiment, comprises two series connected universal joints to produce an angle change of 60.degree. to 70.degree.. A rigid housing confines input and output rotating drive shafts. In a preferred embodiment the yokes and cross members are formed as flat steel plates with tab-into-notch engagements. A method to retain an input shank and an end linkage to a drive shaft is disclosed. End linkages have parallel extending legs where the legs have protruding bumps at a distal end to engage exterior notched slots of input and output drive shafts. The drive shafts are identical in structure. An input shank is permanently held in a recess of the input drive shaft by engagement of a rib of the housing into a groove around the input shank.

    • A drill bit for drilling subterranean formations includes a device to provide a "universal" effect between the shank and crown for self alignment of the crown with the bore hole in the formation. The bit is suitable for downhole assemblies configured for straight drilling, directional drilling and navigational drilling. The device can be incorporated into both drag bits and roller-type "rock" bits. Preferred embodiments include a flexible sub connecting the crown to the shank portion and having reduced stiffness relative to the drill string. Alternatively a spherical universal joint or trunnion type universal is used. Replaceable lugs increase durability and reliability of the universal. The device equalizes the loads on cutters while reducing wear, average loads, and impact loads on cutters. Bore hole diameter and chatter of the bit in the bore hole are reduced, promoting maximum efficiency and rate of penetration as wobble and precession are minimized.

    • A universal joint includes a first shaft member having a cylindrical portion, a pair of yoke portions at a free end thereof and a ball-like portion formed between the yoke portions and a second shaft member having a cylindrical portion and a pair of yoke portions at a free end thereof. The ball-like portion is formed integrally and inseparably with the yoke portions of the first shaft member. The first and second shaft members are thus detachably and movably connected with each other through engagement between the ball-like portion of the former and the yoke portions of the latter.
