    • In a downhole motor bearing section having a cylindrical mandrel rotatably disposed within a cylindrical housing, a bi-directional thrust bearing is disposed within a four-shouldered annular containment chamber formed partially into the inner cylindrical wall of the housing and partially into the outer cylindrical wall of the mandrel. Under on-bottom loading conditions, thrust loads are transferred through the thrust bearing by the upper shoulder of the housing and the lower shoulder of the mandrel. The radial widths of these two shoulders are both symmetrical about the centerline of the thrust bearing such that on-bottom thrust loads are transferred non-eccentrically to the thrust bearing, thereby avoiding twisting loads on the thrust bearing races, increasing the effective on-bottom load capacity of the thrust bearing and extending its service life.

    • One embodiment of a hybrid vertical axis rotating load carrying bearing with continuously variable operating conditions able to carry surprisingly heavy weight, and occasionally easily able to carry drastically more weight than that; The preferred embodiment has 3 different types of bearings combined to form one ideal bearing. The first type of bearing is a half ball and female sliding bearing. The second type of bearing is a floating bearing that surrounds the sliding bearing. The third type of bearing is rolling bearings. In this preferred embodiment with 3 different types of bearings, the rolling bearings are partially engaged under ideal load weight conditions, and nearly fully engaged under severe load weight conditions. The sliding and floating bearings are always fully engaged into the vertical weight load no matter what the vertical weight load may be.Another embodiment is the hybrid bearing containing two types of bearings; a floating bearing and rolling bearings. In this embodiment, a floating bearing is in the center axis and rolling bearings are located outside the floating bearing, on a larger diameter circle. In ideal operating conditions, the floating bearing will hold nearly all the load, and some of the rolling bearings will engage into the rotating load. In severe conditions, nearly all rolling bearings will engage into the rotating load.

    • A unitized seal impeller thrust system includes an impeller unit which includes a tubular neck portion that has flat surfaces on opposite sides of one another. The impeller unit includes a plurality of radially extending blades and a circular trough surrounding the neck portion. The system further includes a seal head assembly which is secured within the trough, and a seal seat assembly which engages the seal head assembly. The system further includes a thrust washer which engages the seal seat assembly and the retainer ring which is secured to the tubular neck portion at an end of the neck portion. The retainer ring also engages the thrust washer in a ball and socket type arrangement. The system provides a unitized seal, impeller, thrust system that is capable of preload testing and/or leak testing before assembly of the pump unit.

    • A thrust bearing assembly for a submersible motor assembly of a submersible pump assembly comprising first and second bearing members or plates and first and second bearing holders contained within a housing. Each bearing plate is in the form of a disk having a bearing surface, and the first and second bearing plates are disposed between the first and second bearing holders with the bearing surfaces in face-to-face contact. The first bearing holder is in the form of a thrust bearing holder, and the second bearing holder is in the form of a gimbal plate. The first bearing plate is adapted to rotate with a rotor shaft of the submersible pump assembly and to impose a thrust load on the second plate, and the second bearing plate is adapted to remain stationary relative to the rotating first bearing plate. Grooves are defined by one or both of the bearing surfaces to allow fluid from a fluid supply to enter between the bearing surfaces to create a fluid film to lubricate and cool the bearing surfaces.
