    • An engine starting method in a parallel-type hybrid vehicle comprises a motor reverse rotation driving step of applying reverse rotation current to drivingly rotate a motor output shaft in a reverse rotation direction of an engine output shaft whereby an elastic member in a damper is elastically deformed to store an urging force that urges the motor output shaft in a normal rotation direction; an urged normal rotation step of stopping the electrification to release the urging force having been stored at the motor reverse rotation driving step whereby the motor output shaft is rotated in the normal rotation direction; a motor normal rotation driving step of applying normal rotation current to drivingly rotate the motor output shaft in the normal rotation direction; and an engine start igniting step of igniting an engine with the engine output shaft being rotated by the rotation at the motor normal rotation driving step.

    • An engine control apparatus is provided for controlling an engine of a motor vehicle. The engine control apparatus is configured to automatically stop the engine by stopping combustion in the engine when a predetermined automatic stop condition is satisfied and restart the engine by driving a starter when a predetermined restart condition is satisfied. The engine control apparatus includes a calculator and a condition changer. The calculator calculates an accumulated value by accumulating a starter deterioration-related value each time the engine is started or restarted by the starter; the accumulated value is indicative of the degree of deterioration of the starter. The condition changer changes, when the accumulated value has increased to reach a threshold value, the predetermined automatic stop condition so as to lower the frequency of the engine being automatically stopped and restarted and thereby suppress deterioration of the starter.

    • A battery state judging method is provided capable of properly judging a state of a lead-acid battery by measuring voltages without measuring currents. A state of the battery is judged by obtaining, in advance, a DC internal resistance r0 of a same type battery in a new and fully-charged state; calculating, in advance, a load R [R=r0×Vst0/(OCV0−Vst0)] at an engine starting time (S112) from an open-circuit voltage OCV0 (S104) and a lowest voltage Vst0 (S108) at the engine starting time, both measured when the loaded battery is in a new and fully-charged state, and the DC internal resistance r0; calculating a DC internal resistance r [(r=R/(OCV−Vst)/Vst)] of the loaded battery from an open-circuit voltage OCV (S104) and a lowest voltage Vst (S108), both measured when the loaded battery is in a deteriorated/insufficiently-charged state, and the load R; and comparing r and r0.
