    • A longitudinal side bar is employed in connection with a standard type of cylinder lock having wafer tumblers with ears that extend through a opening in the rotatable cylinder into the cylinder housing. In order to open the lock, the tumbler ears must be retracted into the cylinder. The longitudinal side bar is held in a longitudinal groove in the rotatable cylinder. When the cylinder rotates, the side bar cams radially inward to engage the tumblers. When the lock is being comprised and torque is applied to the cylinder, the cylinder rotates a predetermined amount even though the tumbler ears are not retracted. The side bar will then ride in to engage the edges of the tumblers to prevent further retraction of the tumbler ears. In this fashion, compromise of the lock is defeated. A sheet metal curved leaf type spring is also employed to grip the tumblers and provide a constant spring force tending to prevent the tumblers from being aligned by a pick.

    • A lever lock unit includes a housing, a dogging element adapted to actuate a lock bolt, a plurality of lever tumblers that are actuable via the dogging element and movable relative thereto, and a blocking element for blocking movement of the dogging element in the absence of a key or when the wrong key is inserted in the unit. The unit is characterized by a cradle accommodated in the dogging element and adapted to receive the lever tumblers. The dogging element is rotatable and is adapted so that when rotated, the cradle accommodated in the dogging element, and there with also the lever tumblers accomodated in the cradle, will be caused to move linearly in relation to the dogging element and in relation to a key inserted into the unit, for movement of the lever tumblers to a blocking element release position when the correct key is inserted.

    • Cylinder locks for use in the locking of doors on opposite sides of a vehicle, each have a single barrel which carries tumblers that abut internal shoulders of the lock casing to obstruct turning of the barrel in an unlocking sense (different for the two locks) until the tumblers are withdrawn into the barrel by initial turning of an inserted key. The barrel in each case is free to turn in the opposite, locking, sense without any obstruction, turning in both senses being opposed resiliently by a coiled spring that embraces a spindle of the barrel externally of the casing. The tumblers of one lock are spaced by a bush forwardly within their barrel as compared with the tumblers of the other lock so that different sets of the cuts of the common key engage the tumblers of the two locks.

    • A plug assembly for a lock includes a generally cylindrical plug body that defines a keyway and a generally cylindrical plug housing that rotatably receives the plug body, A plurality of blocking members are housed in the plug body and are movable into the keyway upon rotation of the plug body relative to the plug housing to obstruct the keyway.
