    • A system for strengthening a sloped structure comprises first and second opposing sides, a bottom side, fill material, a plurality of facing baskets adjacent the first side, a plurality of reinforcing members disposed within the fill material, and an impermeable membrane. The second side is adapted to be adjacent the sloped structure. The bottom side adjoins bottom edges of the first and second sides, thereby forming a cavity within the first, second, and bottom sides. The fill material is disposed within the cavity. The impermeable membrane encapsulates at least a portion of the fill material and one or more of the reinforcing members. The facing baskets and the reinforcing members are positioned in a plurality of layers, with each layer comprising one facing basket and one corresponding reinforcing member. The impermeable membrane is positioned to span two or more layers of the plurality of layers.

    • A waste disposal site according to the present invention is provided with water-impermeable properties by water-impermeable materials covering a bottom surface and a sloped side surface of the waste disposal site. The waste disposal site is provided with a water-impermeable material damage-detecting system comprising electrodes for feeding electricity disposed above and below the water-impermeable materials for forming an electric field, and electrodes for measurement disposed along the water-impermeable materials. The system allows for detection of damages to the water-impermeable materials based on a potential variation at a damaged portion thereof. In the waste disposal site, a surface of the water-impermeable material on the sloped side surface is provided with water-retentive cover layers through a planting material or by employing an artificial material, and an electric field is formed inside the cover layer to allow any damages to the water-impermeable materials on the sloped side surface to be detected.

    • A water impervious, elastomeric coating is applied to the outer surface of a foundation wall and across the joint between the lower end of the wall and the footing. Protection board is bonded to the elastomeric coating and serves to prevent damage to the coating during backfilling of the foundation wall. The protection board is composed of an impact resistant, extruded, thermoplastic material and has inner and outer faces connected together by a series of parallel spaced ribs which define vertical channels that extend the height of the board. A plurality of spaced isolated holes are formed in the outer face of the board and communicate with the channels. The board not only protects the elastomeric coating from damage, but the inner face provides an additional waterproofing membrane, and the holes and channels facilitate movement of water to the drain tile and relieve hydrostatic pressure on the wall.
