    • An expansion joint system which is provided to accommodate forces applied to highway construction during normal changes in ambient conditions, and which is also designed to withstand seismic forces and vehicular forces, which may be applied in transverse and longitudinal directions. The system includes spaced-apart transverse vehicle load bearing members which are placed in a gap defined between adjacent sections of highway construction, longitudinally extending support members positioned beneath the load bearing members, means embedded within the adjacent roadway sections that control longitudinal, transverse and vertical movement, and a mechanism for controlling the spacing between the transverse load bearing beams. Preferably, this mechanism maintains a substantially equal distance between the transverse load bearing beam members.

    • A bridging device for an expansion joint, the expansion joint being placed between an abutment and a superstructure, comprises at least one plate that extends longitudinally of the joint, and is placed between the abutment and the superstructure, and which is supported on at least two traverses that span the expansion joint while resting upon the abutment and the superstructure. A tooth profile is placed on the top side of the plate and the teeth thereof, which point toward both sides, mesh with the teeth of teeth profiles assigned to the adjacent plates or edge profiles. Two sealing strips are connected to each plate and are detachably connected to the adjacent plate(s) or to the adjacent edge profile(s). Both sealing strips connected to the relevant plate are, in the area of the parting plane, fixed between the at least one plate and the tooth profile placed thereon.

    • An expansion joint system which is designed to accommodate forces applied to highway construction during normal changes in ambient conditions, and which is also designed to withstand seismic forces which may be applied in transverse and longitudinal directions. The system comprises spaced-apart transverse beams which are placed in a gap defined between adjacent sections of highway construction such as in a bridge. Longitudinally extending support bars are positioned beneath the beams, and the ends of the bars are located in the interiors of boxes associated with the highway sections. One set of boxes confines bar ends against transverse movement but permits longitudinal movement. The other set of boxes permits the transverse movement but limits longitudinal movement.

    • A new and improved hold-down assembly is provided for attachment to modular expansion joints. These expansion joints are used to connect sections of bridge roadways. The hold-down assemblies secure the joint in such a manner as to allow for movement due to expansion, contraction, and rotation and additionally eliminate the noise produced by the joint which is generated by the traffic flow. The hold-down assembly consists of a thin strip of stainless steel which is bonded to the underside of a supporting bar for the joint. The supporting bar makes contact with a plurality of fabric reinforced elastomeric pads topped wtih thin sheets of teflon. The hold-down assemblies are attached to the joints members by means of welded flanges and appropriate hardware.

    • Modular expansion joint made from aluminum extrusions providing the longitudinal frames, longitudinal rails, and load-bearing support beams. The rails have an I-beam structure with downwardly and upwardly opening channels respectively receiving a lip of the frames and receiving and interlocking therein deformable longitudinal beads on the lower surface of an elastomer tread which completely covers and spans the joint.
