    • The hammer impact cracks the concrete, then separates the concrete from the steel and creates concrete aggregate. The hammer has a pair of arms with an angled portion for sliding on an angled portion of guide plates, which have a long surface in contact with the hammer arms to provide a stable movement of the hammer without sideways motions. The hammer can be a gravity drop hammer or a compressed gas accelerated hammer. The hammer can pivot to adjust the blows to be perpendicular to the surface being impacted. The pivot also helps in retracting the hammer from the concrete to unjam it therefrom particularly when the concrete is moving relative to the hammer. The pivotable hammer is useful for transporting the hammer and for maintenance work on the hammer. The hammer has teeth to increase the shock of impact to crack and then break the concrete along the cracks.

    • An single apparatus to drill and lift core specimens from an aggregate field includes a frame structure that can be deployed to a workface and is adapted to hydraulically deploy a rotating core drilling bit upon that workface to cut a core specimen from the substrate. The hydraulic deployment of the drill bit is self aligning and does not require complex alignment steps to ensure the maximum cutting efficiency and lifetime of the bit. The same apparatus that can be used to drive and deploy the drill bit can also be adapted to receive and lift the as-cut core specimen from the newly created hole in the substrate. Once lifted, the received specimen can be positioned out of the work area so that work within the newly created circular hole can progress.

    • A layer of material such as pavement or sheet ice coating the surface of a roadway is efficiently removed using apparatus that includes a longitudinal tube in a breaker assembly which is rotatably carried by a control frame beam that depends from an articulate hydraulic lift and tilt mechanism of a road grader. Coaxially attached to the tube and uniformly distributed along its length, a number of retainer rings each carry several radially extended teeth that function to fragment the layer. Each tooth includes a tip portion with a free end that penetrates and punctures the layer and a trailing divergent portion which enters the puncture and translates a linear force applied thereto into a radial outward force that fractures and fragments the side walls of each puncture when the breaker assembly is lowered onto the layer and a downward force is applied to each tooth as the breaker assembly rolls over the layer surface.

    • A mobile pavement replacement system (MPRS) is provided for forcibly drawing a flexibly-supported, acute-angled wedge under an existing stretch of a predetermined width of reinforced pavement to initiate removal thereof from the ground below. Gravity-assisted impact hammers apply downward blows of a controlled magnitude and at a predetermined rate onto an upper surface of the reinforced pavement, to crack the same across the entire width thereof over the wedge being driven therebelow. The wedge is flexibly supported, with a predetermined amount of elasticity in the up-and-down direction, so that it essentially "floats" and facilitates absorption of the impact forces by the reinforced pavement to be cracked thereby. Cracked reinforced pavement is subjected to further blows by a hammer coacting with a set of bars transverse thereto, to forcibly render a bulk component of the reinforced pavement into small pieces separated from reinforcement material contained therein. The reinforcement material, is now separated from the bulk component, chopped up and delivered in a flow separate from that of the rendered bulk component. The rendered materials are selectively combined with other suitable materials and integrated into a replacement pavement continuously laid in the wake of the moving MPRS.

    • An improved pavement extractor is disclosed herein which comprises a completely self-contained unit for removal of pavement in a situation where a new pavement is to be created. The device includes a combination of rippers and a hold-down pressure plate which efficiently extracts the pavement from the sub-base, a control chamber where the extracted pavement is led from the rippers and the hold-down pressure plate, which control chamber has located therein a pair of opposed rollers which controllably hold the pavement while a beater mechanism beats off pieces of the pavement of predetermined adjustable size. From the beater mechanism, the extracted pavement is conveyed to an elevator mechanism included in the device which conveys the now beaten small size pieces of pavement up to a sufficiently high level so as to enable the loading thereof into a vehicle such as a dump truck. The inventive pavement extractor is designed to be pulled by a crawler-type tractor which may have mounted thereon an automatic guiding device which also forms a part of the present invention. Through the use of the present invention, pavement as thick as 7 to 8 inches or more may be extracted.

    • Asphalt cutting apparatus for breaking up and windrowing old asphaltic pavement on a roadway or the like including the pavement adjacent to a curb or gutter. A plurality of laterally spaced, sharpened cutter discs are freely rotatably mounted on a support carriage. The support carriage is attached to a frame pivotally coupled at a forward pivot to a prime mover such as a truck or similar vehicle for movement along the asphalt surface. As the cutter discs are moved along the asphalt surface a hydraulic clamp cylinder provides a vertical movement about the forward pivot to vary the depth of cut and also maintains a downward pressure on the cutter discs and forces the discs to roll through and cut up the asphalt. The construction and mounting of the support carriage is such that the discs are adjustably movable laterally axially along a horizontal axis for selective positioning adjacent to a curb or gutter and are further adjustably movable about a pivot to slope laterally outwardly and downwardly so that the discs are positioned at different cutting depths relative to one another for cutting an asphalt surface that is sloped for drainage purposes.
