    • A vibratory pneumatic tire roller of the present invention comprises a frame, tire attaching means supported on each side by said frame with vibration proof members and bearings, a tire attached to said tire attaching means, and a vibration generating device having a vibration generating shaft provided within the outer diameter of said tire between said bearings placed at the ends of said tire attaching means, said vibration generating device transmitting vibration to said tire by rotating said vibration generating shaft with a drive source for generating vibration. Accordingly, the vibration generated by the vibration generating device is transmitted to the tire efficiently. The present invention achieves a self-propelled ride-on type vibratory pneumatic tire roller which is suitable for the road compaction.

    • An improved mechanism for generating vibrations in the horizontal plane for a ground compacting machine is disclosed. At least a rotary shaft with an eccentric mass mounted for generating required vibrations is rotatably supported within the rolling wheel. The rotary shaft adapted to be rotated by a hydraulic motor assumes the position where its center line of rotation is located on a linear line radially extending from the center line of rotation of the rolling wheel. Rotation of the hydraulic motor is usually transmitted to the rotary shaft for the eccentric mass via bevel gears. Typically, an opposing pair of rotary shafts are disposed opposite to one another relative to the center line of rotation of the rolling wheel. Three or more rotary shafts may be disposed in such a manner that their eccentric masses are distributed so as to assure good weight balance. The center line of rotation of the rotary shaft may be located in parallel with a linear line radially extending from the center line of rotation of the rolling wheel. The rotary shafts may assume the position where their center lines are located in the spaced relation in the axial direction of the center line of rotation of the rolling wheel. The rolling wheel made of steel plate is preferably covered with a layer of rubber coating.

    • A method of soil compaction consists in, during compaction of the soil, applying a smaller auxiliary force around the area of the soil to which a larger compacting force is applied. In soil compacting apparatus a pneumatic tire is used for applying the auxiliary force and the compacting force is applied by a cylindrical or non-cylindrical compacting member located within the tire, the compacting member being adapted to contact the inner surface of the tire for applying the compacting force to the soil. In another embodiment, the compacting member is mounted adjacent the pneumatic tire on a common axle therewith.
