The invention also is directed to a rail grinding method wherein the rail is ground by such a compound working movement.

    • A method for grinding the running and/or guide surfaces of rails or the like, where the running surfaces are ground by an endless revolving abrasive belt which can be moved against the running surfaces, wherein the abrasive belt revolves transversely to the longitudinal axis of the rail and embraces, at least partially with prestress, the running and/or guide surfaces. An apparatus for performing the method includes a mobile grinding machine, which an endless abrasive belt, guided at least on one rail of the track, which abrasive belt revolves over a drive roller and a reversal arranged at a distance therefrom and which can be moved by these against the surfaces of the rail to be ground. The reversal is formed of two reversing rollers which have a comparatively small spacing from each other, that the axes of the reversing rollers and of the drive roller 19 being arranged to be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rail. Thus, the abrasive belt revolves transversely to the longitudinal axis of the rail and at least one reversing roller can be lowered beneath the upper edge of the running surface of the rail for partially embracing the surfaces of the rail.

    • A fine grinding device for the continuous reprofiling in situ of the surface of the head of at least one rail of a railway track includes at least one fine grinding unit per rail. Each one of these fine grinding units carries a beam (1) on which are mounted rotatably at least two pulleys (4, 8) situated slightly above the rail (3) and around which is arranged an endless abrasive brand (5) working in the longitudinal direction of the rail.     • A mobile rail grinding machine comprises a machine frame extending in a longitudinal direction, and undercarriages supporting the machine frame on the track rails for movement in an operating direction. A mounting frame is supported on the track rails by flanged wheels, and a drive vertically adjustably connects the mounting frame to the machine frame. At least one rail head grinding unit is arranged on the mounting frame and comprises an abrasive belt having opposite ends, a storage spool holding one of the belt ends and a collecting spool holding the opposite belt end whereby the abrasive belt may be reeled off the storage spool and onto the collecting spool, and a pressure element arranged to press the abrasive belt against the surface area of the rail head off which the irregularities are to be ground. The grinding unit is positioned adjustably horizontally and in the longitudinal direction, and a driving mechanism imparts an oscillating motion to the grinding unit, which motion is superimposed on the movement of the machine frame in the operating direction.
