    • Methods and devices are provided to actively apply finish to one or more yarns in motion at speeds greater than about 3000 m/min, to achieve a finish application of 0.2 wt. % or more, and with a coefficient of variation of finish concentration of 10% or less. The devices are compact, portable and readily installed at a variety of positions on a fiber processing line. The devices of the invention contain the finish so that contamination of the surrounding areas is prevented. The devices may be used to provide an overfinish to a moving yarn between heated godet rolls. The so-provided heating may be used to dry the yarn and to promote curing reactions in the finish and between the yarn and finish compounds. The invention also includes the finished yarn products so produced. A yarn with increased finish uniformity is provided with an overfinish actively applied and dried on the draw bench before the first winding operation. The yarn products of the invention may be used in textile and leisure fiber applications, and in industrial fiber applications, such as in tires.

    • A process for improving the uniformity of yarn finish application on the individual filaments of a rapidly advancing synthetic continuous monofilament, bonded multi-filament, multi-filament hosiery, textile, technical and industrial yarns includes imparting a pneumatic false twist to the advancing yarn having a wet finish thereon while the yarn is under a tension allowing the rapid opening and closing of the multi-filament yarn but preventing texturing or coherency from increasing by commingling of the yarn filaments in the false twister. A nozzle has a reduced friction and can either be used as a stand-alone air bearing or to apply finish within the nozzle. A plurality of finish delivery orifices open into the chamber in a low pressure zone inside the nozzle, and wherein the exact same or slightly greater pressure that is used for the compressed air supplied to the air delivery orifices is used to actuate the finish supplied to the plurality of the finish delivery orifices. The process and apparatus can also be used with monofilament textile yarn and bonded textile yarn.

    • It has been suggested that synthetic multifilamentary yarns can be produced by melt-spinning a polyamide or polyester polymer under conditions of substantially simultaneous spinning and drawing wherein prior to said drawing the filaments of the fiber are lubricated with a spin finish by surface contact with a lube roll surface of not less than about 90 RMS. However, in commercial operation of the process at high throughput rates of 50 pounds per hour or greater through the spinneret, serious problems have been encountered due to "flicking" or momentary slackness of one or more filaments from the main yarn bundle above the lube roll, which flicking results in production of yarn of relatively poor quality. It has now been found that the occurrence of said flicking of the filaments can be greatly reduced by applying the spin finish from a convergence guide having a yarn-lubricating surface of not less than about 10 RMS and means for distributing a film of lubricant over said surface. The resulting high-strength multifilament yarn having relatively uniform quality is particularly applicable for tire and industrial uses.
