    • A method of applying a coating of a hot-melt adhesive to a substrate which comprises applying as the adhesive coating a composition which comprises (A) about 1 to 99 percent by weight of thermoplastic segmented copolyester elastomer consisting essentially of a multiplicity of recurring short chain ester units and long chain ester units joined through ester linkages, said short chain ester units amounting to about 15 to 75 percent by weight of said copolyester and being derived from aromatic dicarboxylic acid such as terephthalic acid, or a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids, and an organic diol such as butanediol, and said long chain ester units amounting to about 25 to 85 percent by weight of said copolyester and being derived from aromatic dicarboxylic acid such as terephthalic acid, or a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids, and a long chain glycol such as polytetramethylene ether glycol, said copolyester having a melt index of less than about 150 and a melting point of at least about 125.degree.C., and (B) about 1 to 99 percent by weight of one or more low molecular weight thermoplastic resins including hydrocarbon resins such as coumarone-indene resins, petroleum resins, styrene polymers, cyclopentadiene resins and terpene resins, bituminous asphalts, coal tar pitches, rosins, phenolic resins, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon waxes, and chlorinated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, can be applied to various substrates such as films, furniture, tiles, labels, tapes, decorative molding of wood or plastic, etc.

    • An adhesive composition comprises essentially (a) 100 parts by weight of a block copolymer of the formula A-B-A, wherein each A is an independently selected polymer block of a monovinylsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon having a molecular weight between 8000 and 45,000, and B is a polymer block of a conjugated diene having a molecular weight between 35,000 and 150,000 or hydrogenated derivatives thereof, and (b) 50 to 150 parts of a fully hydrogenated ester of rosin, or a mixture of 10 to 150 parts by weight of a rosin-based resin together with 25 to 100 parts by weight of a coumarone-indene resin (which may be phenol modified), a polymerized hydrocarbon resin or a coal tar resin. Optional components comprise (c) 0 to 50 parts of a particulate filler, (d) 0 to 50 parts of a rubber extender oil, (e) 0 to 800 parts of a volatile liquid carrier, (f) natural or synthetic rubbers, (g) 10-100 parts of polystyrene, and (h) antioxidants or antiozonants, e.g. zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate. For use as pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions, the compositions preferably utilize a fully hydrogenated ester of rosin, while for use as contact or heat-activated adhesive compositions, it is preferred that a resin mixture of class (b) is also incorporated. Suitable rosin-based resins include wood, polymerized, hydrogenated, disproportionated, dimerized, pentaerythritol esters of, pentaerythriol esters of hydrogenated or polymerized, glycerol esters of, glycerol esters of hydrogenated, or methyl esters of hydrogenated rosins. Exemplified components are (a) polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene and polystyrene - polyisoprene, polystyrene, (b) a pentaerythritol ester of hydrogenated rosin, a polymerized wood rosin, and partially and completely hydrogenated pentaerythritol esters of rosin, coumarone-indene resins, and (c) hexane-toluene-acetone mixture and (d) polystyrene.
