    • There is disclosed a reactor designed to produce phosphoric acid by wet process. The reaction vessel proper is a cylindrical body divided into two compartments by a sinusoidal wall. The first space formed inside by the cylindrical wall of the vessel and the sinusoidal one and by one curved segment joining them is semi-circular and serves as pre-mixer provided with a stirring device and a pocket to allow the fluid flowing down through the bottom to reach the reaction space overhead. The reaction vat has two compartments and provided with a series of stirring devices so located as to permit an efficient, intimate mixture of the reaction medium. The vat is integrally roofed by a tight cover with many orifices left in it fitted for connection sleeves, such as: supply, gas venting, sight holes, and manholes, etc. The reactor incorporates as an integral unit a space devoted to the pre-mixing of reactants and means to guide the reaction medium through the reaction vessel; in this way the retention time required for the reaction process and calcium sulphate crystallization is decreased.

    • When sulfate ions and a solution of monocalcium phosphate are reacted under conditions which result in the formation of a slurry comprising calcium sulfate hemihydrate and phosphoric acid of about 35% to about 55% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, filtration is improved when a sulfonic acid, a sulfonic acid salt, tall oil fatty acid or alkoxylated or esterified tall oil fatty acid and mixtures thereof is present in the slurry (preferably at 1-1000 ppm). Preferably a two vessel reaction system is used in which the reaction slurry undergoes intra- and inter- vessel circulation (preferably through a draft tube). The solution portion of the slurry in the first vessel (the "dissolver") is preferably maintained at a negative sulfate concentration (i.e. excess Ca.sup.+2) and the solution in the second vessel (the "crystallizer") is preferably maintained at a positive sulfate ion concentration, most preferably at a reduced pressure, (e.g. to provide evaporative cooling). Better filtration rates can thus be obtained due to the lower viscosity of the slurry and/or favorable shape, dominant size and size distribution of the hemihydrate crystals.

    • A multi-compartment reaction system for the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the wet process having a recirculation slurry flash cooler. The removal of heat from the reaction system is accomplished by circulating reaction zone slurry through an elevated vacuum flash cooler under the combined effect of differential liquid levels maintained in the system, and the vacuum in the flash cooler. The amount of reaction zone slurry passed to the flash cooler is sufficiently large so that the temperature differential experienced by the slurry is low and crystallization of calcium sulfate from the slurry liquid occurs in a favorable manner. There is also a substantial reduction in the pumping requirements compared with conventional operations in which the slurry is pumped to an elevated flash cooler, even though the large amount of slurry is passed to the flash cooler in accordance with the invention. In the process of the invention, reaction slurry is withdrawn from a reactor compartment in which the liquid level is substantially higher than in the reactor compartment to which the slurry passes from the flash cooler. This differential in liquid levels and the effect of the vacuum in the flash cooler cause reaction slurry to flow through the flash cooler to remove heat of reaction without the necessity of pumping.

    • Phosphate rock and sulfuric acid are reacted under conditions which result in the formation of calcium sulfate hemihydrate and phosphoric acid of about 35% to about 55% P.sub.2 O.sub.5. A two vessel reaction system is used in which the reaction slurry undergoes intra- and inter- vessel circulation (preferably through a draft tube). The solution portion of the slurry in the first vessel (the "dissolver") is preferably maintained at a negative sulfate concentration (i.e. excess Ca.sup.+2) and the solution in the second vessel (the "crystallizer") is preferably maintained at a positive sulfate ion concentration. Also preferred is that the second vessel be maintained at a reduced pressure, (e.g. to provide evaporation cooling). Better filtration rates can thus be obtained due to the favorable shape, dominant size and size distribution of the hemihydrate crystals. Most preferred is that a crystal modifier (e.g. a sulfonic acid, a sulfonic acid salt, tall oil fatty acids or alkoxylated or esterified tall oil fatty acids) be present in the crystallizer. Surprisingly, the sulfuric acid used in the process can be less (e.g., 0.5-10%) than the stoichiometric amount to convert the calcium in the feed phosphate rock to calcium sulphate.
