    • A rugged, heavy duty, industrial-type hand held can opener tool is provided with a male drive formation to which a battery operated power drill or the like may be connected so the tool may be held in one hand, and may be operated by a power tool held in the other hand. When two pivotally connected handles of the can opener close toward each other, a cutting formation carried on one handle and a toothed drive wheel carried on the other handle grip the can. As the handles close, the cutting formation punctures the lid of the can adjacent the rim of the can. As the drive wheel rotates causing the can to turn, the cutting formation smoothly circumferentially severs the lid from the rim. The severed lid and the burr-free de-lidded can fall free when the handles are opened.

    • A can opener having a body having an elongate stem, a handle, a circular blade mounted for rotation relative to the body and a drive wheel which is rotatable by the handle. The drive wheel is movable towards and away from the circular blade to selectively grip and release a portion of the can positioned between the blade and the drive wheel. The can opener is further provided with a lock operable to maintain the drive wheel in a predetermined position relative to the blade when said portion of a can is gripped between the blade and drive wheel. The blade and drive wheel, in use, grip the raised peripheral rim of the can which projects upwardly from the lid of the can.

    • Disclosed is a safe and reliable method and apparatus for opening cylindrical metallic containers which cuts into the side of the cylindrical body of the can below the upper annular rim. The device of the present invention employs a specially adapted, angularly-positioned, tapered rotatable blade for performing the cutting operation. The use of a rotatable blade results in a clean non-jagged cut around the circumference of the container. The use of a rotatable, tapered blade to cut below the annular rim or seam of the container results in an inwardly-bent edge on the newly-cut lid having no sharp edges. This facilitates easy and worry free removal of the lid. In use, a can is placed in the device such that the knurled edge of an upper disc rests upon the top of the can. The rotatable side cutting blade is then moved such that it pierces the side of the can, just below the lip seal. The side cutting blade is locked into place, and the upper disc is rotated, thereby rotating the can. As this takes place, the rotatable side cutting blade cuts the top off the can.
