    • To allow smooth access to such elements as operating knobs for power window switches and a door lock switch provided in a unit panel in the night time lighting condition, the entire surface of an escutcheon panel mounted on the unit panel is defined as a switch operating part for an illuminating lamp which illuminates the elements to be accessed. The illuminating lamp may be lighted up for a prescribed time period to illuminate the escutcheon panel when the switch operating part is touched so that unnecessary consumption of electric power may be avoided. The escutcheon panel may be made of at lease semi-transparent plastic so that light from an illuminating lamp placed behind the escutcheon panel may be transmitted through the escutcheon panel. Alternatively, the element to be accessed such as a switch knob mounted on the escutcheon panel may be made of at lease semi-transparent plastic so that illuminating light may be transmitted therethrough.

    • A switchable light fixture which may be usefully be employed as an interior automotive lighting fixture includes an insulating plate defining an interior cavity in which a sliding piece is disposed and supports an opposed pair of lamp sockets for holding a lamp. A plurality of stationary parallel contacts (at least two of which form a pair of lateral stationary contacts, and one of which forms a middle stationary contact) are positionally held by means of recessed surfaces or channels defined between respective upright supports. A pair of lateral plugs each formed by an outwardly bent terminal end portion of a respective one of the lateral stationary contacts is positioned in a respective pair of the recessed surfaces or defined channels so as to be disposed over the lateral pair of stationary contacts, with a middle plug being portioned between the pair of lateral plugs. Each of the middle stationary contact and the middle plug includes a connector strip which is connected to a respective one of the lamp sockets. A switch cover which forms an upper extent of the cavity in which the sliding piece is disposed is provided with a unitary plug cover. The switch cover positionally holds stationary contacts, while the plug cover provides a protective cover over the lateral pair of plugs and the middle plug.

    • An all-purpose lamp for use with vehicles. The lamp includes an air impervious housing having a lens formed therein in optical alignment with a bulb carried within the housing. The housing is open at its lower end for receiving a bulb carrier which is movable relative to the housing. Movement of the bulb carrier controls the on-off operation of the lamp. In one embodiment this switching function is effected by operation of a slide supported on the lamp housing and engaging the bulb carrier. Movement of the slide relative to the lamp housing will effect a corresponding movement of the bulb carriage, thereby moving the bulb in to and out from engagement with a pair of electrical contacts supported within the upper portion of the lamp housing. In this manner, illumination of the lamp is controlled by moving the slide to effect a corresponding movement of the bulb carrier into engagement with the electrical contacts coupled to the vehicle power supply. Movement of the slide in the opposite direction and, therefore, the bulb carrier relative to the lamp housing, will physically separate the bulb from the energizing contacts thereby terminating illumination.

    • A light fixture with an actuator retained switch particularly adapted for surface mounting to a variety of supporting surfaces, e.g., the interior of a recreational vehicle, includes a housing, lens and mounting structure for suspending the switch within the housing. The mounting structure consists of a pair of mutually spaced internal walls which contain slots adapted to receive the edges of the switch. The switch is positioned between the two internal walls such that the operating member of the switch is in position to readily engage the switch actuator. Engagement of the switch operator and actuator serves to lock them together and retain both upon the housing. To operate the switch, the user manipulates the actuator, which is locked to the operating member of the switch, by sliding the actuator from side-to-side.

    • A light fixture, particularly adapted for use in vehicles, including land recreational vehicles and boats, comprises a base fixable on a mounting surface of a vehicle and including provision for mounting a lamp to shine forward from the base. A light transmitting lens mounts in front of the base for covering a lamp mounted on the base. The lens is convexly shaped and laterally overhangs the base with a peripheral portion adapted to lie close to the mounting surface at a height less than the height of the base. The lens has a central portion extending from the peripheral portion and overlapping the base for transmitting light from a lamp on the base. A lamp actuating switch is located on the base under the lens and upon depression of the lens by the user changes the state of the switch and the condition of illumination of the light fixture.

    • Enclosures such as drawers and glove compartments are provided with a light that automatically turns on when the enclosure is opened and turns off when closed. This light has a lightbulb in circuit with batteries and a switching mechanism, including a spring and actuator for the spring which is mounted to rotate, move linearly outwardly and inwardly relative to the light's housing, or do both simultaneously. The actuator has a portion engaging the spring and an arcuate edge portion extending beyond the housing which engages a surface of the enclosure when the enclosure is opened or closed. During relative movement between the enclosure surface and the light, the actuator moves the spring between two positions, one of which opens the circuit to the lightbulb, the other of which closes this circuit.

    • A light (1) for vehicles having a switch (2) and a pivotably mounted window (25) for illumination whose pivoting causes operation of the switch (2), is characterized in that the switch (2) has a contact lever (4) mounted in a pivotable fashion about an axis of rotation (3), with the contact lever (4) having an operation arm (5) extending in a first direction away from the axis of rotation (3) as well as a contact arm (6) extending in a second direction away from the axis of rotation (3), wherein the operation arm (5) has an operation region (7) having a first separation with respect to the axis of rotation (3) and the contact arm (6) has a contact region (8) having a second separation with respect to the axis of rotation (3), wherein the second separation is larger than the first separation and, by means of a directed motion of the operation arm (5) in the operation region (7), the contact lever (4) pivots about the axis of rotation (3) and the contact region (8) moves in such a fashion as to operate the switch (2). The window (25) is coupled to the operation region (7). This lighting configuration is economical and guarantees a reliable switching while simultaneously satisfying, due to the limited window pivot, requirements with regard to appearance. In addition, the configuration has a minimum number of plugs/contact pieces and only four plugs/contact pieces are necessary in the conventional vehicle lighting having three switch positions for ON, DC (door contact) and OFF.
