    • An apparatus inserts documents into envelopes and includes a document insert station and a document conveyor that conveys documents to be inserted within envelopes to the document insert station. Each envelope has an envelope opening and a flap to close the opening and defines a hinge line. An envelope feeder feeds envelopes upside down on the hinge line with the flap up into the document insert station and angled from the document conveyor. An insert plate is positioned at the document insert station that receives a document conveyed from the document conveyor and includes orifices though which air is blown onto the envelope fed into the document insert station to open the envelope and receive a document conveyed from the document conveyor.

    • In apparatus for and a method of inserting a series of contents (1) into a series of containers (3), identifying magnetic indicia are printed on each one of the series of contents before insertion in the containers. After insertion and sealing of the containers the contents cannot be visually inspected without breaking the seals. The indicia are magnetically read by a reader (7) through the material of the sealed containers (3) and visible indicia corresponding to the identifying magnetic indicator retrieved from store (6), and applied to the exterior of the containers by a printer (5). The apparatus and method are applicable to automatic mailing systems where it is necessary to ensure that the correct addresses corresponding to a previously inserted series of letters in a series of respective envelopes are printed later on the exteriors of the envelopes. Instead of magnetically based systems, infra-red radio isotope or radio frequency identification based systems may also be used.

    • An inserting apparatus for placing a product in an envelope is provided with a discharge path. The discharge path is provided with a skewed roller conveyer which comprises a plurality of rollers arranged at an angle relative to the discharge conveying direction, to align the envelopes along a stop extending in the conveying direction of the roller conveyer. The discharge path is provided with at least one pressing device extending above the roller conveyor to press envelopes towards the roller conveyor, the pressing device comprising at least one array of vertically moveable, rotatable balls. The roller conveyor is provided with at least one endless transport belt for the envelopes, extending opposite the at least one pressing device, the endless belt extending substantially transversally with respect to the rollers.

    • A method, system and article for producing an envelope having improved seal integrity. The method comprises the steps of disposing at least one material at the interface of the adhesive seal between the flap and the body portion of the envelope, which material exhibits a characteristic property when combined with an activating agent. The envelope is then sealed by closing the flap onto the body portion of the envelope such that the activating agent combines with the material along the sealing interface. The sealing interface is inspected to determine whether the material exhibits the characteristic property thereby confirming that a seal has been produced between the flap and body portion of the envelope. The system and article are directed to the various modules of a mailpiece fabrication system employed to produce the mailpiece including an inspection module for confirming that a seal has been formed.
