    • The invention provides a conversation device having a space key for instructing feeding of a printing tape without printing, a pulse oscillator for producing pulses of predetermined period upon depression of the space key, a counter for counting the pulses generated from the pulse oscillator, a one-shot multivibrator for producing a pulse to indicate that the count value has reached a predetermined value, a flip-flop which is set by the pulse from the one-shot multivibrator and allows the pulses from the pulse oscillator to be supplied to a motor driver for amplifying the pulses and which is reset when the predetermined number of pulses from the pulse oscillator is received and prohibits the supply of the pulse oscillator to the motor driver, and a pulse motor for feeding the printing tape without printing. Therefore, when the flip-flop is set, the motor driver causes the pulse motor to drive the printing tape for a predetermined length corresponding to a plurality of characters. The device further includes a CPU for discriminating a depressed key and for supplying a signal to the motor driver which causes the pulse motor to drive the printing tape for a length corresponding to one character.

    • A repeat spacing mechanism for a manual typewriter includes feed and keep pawls that are rotatable in a horizontal plane in conjunction with a horizontal escapement wheel operatively connected to a carriage. A spring is interposed between the feed pawl and a repeat spacing key, wherein the keep and feed pawls are alternately engaged with the escapement wheel and disengaged therefrom so as to cause the carriage to make a repeat spacing movement under control of the bias of the spring while the repeat spacing key is depressed. The spring may be provided with a holding member that is adjustably connected to a lever which is connected to and actuated by said repeat spacing key. In addition, an inertia increasing member may be secured to an end of one of said pawls.

    • A repeat escapement mechanism for automatically repetitively stepping a carriage of a typewriter while holding an actuating key in depressed position. The mechanism is operative independently of the conventional incremental stepping escapement mechanism of the typewriter and includes a pivoted member having a tooth and a camming portion biased into engagement respectively, with the star wheel and holding dog of the conventional escapement mechanism. The pivoted member normally is held in inoperative position. When the key is depressed the pivoted member is rendered operative to cam the holding dog out of engagement with the star wheel with the tooth of the pivoted member engaging the star wheel. Rotation of the star wheel by reason of the bias on the typewriter carriage effects oscillation of the pivoted member to effect repetitive stepping of the carriage.

    • In a repeat spacing mechanism for typewriters, first and second wheels are rigidly mounted on a shaft rotatably engaged with a carriage in an axial direction. Generally, the wheel faces a pair of pawls rotatably mounted on a pawl shaft in a plane parallel with the rotating plane of these wheels and alternately engaged with or disengaged from the wheels. There is provided a weight at the lower end of the pawl shaft. Depression of a type key or space bar causes the pawls to be alternately engaged with or disengaged from th first wheel and the carriage to make a normal single step movement, and while a repeat spacing key remains depressed, the pawls are alternately engaged with or disengaged from the second wheel, thereby permitting the carriage to make a repeat spacing movement at a proper speed under the influence of the weight.
