    • A method of controlling a printer includes measuring a first voltage value of a power supply of the printer before energizing heat generating elements of a print head of the printer. The method also includes calculating, by a controller of the printer, the number of heat generating elements that are simultaneously energizable based on the measured first voltage value of the power supply, an end voltage value of the power supply, an internal resistance value of the power supply, a resistance value of each of the heat generating elements, and a current value of an electric current flowing through a motor of the printer for conveying recording paper. The method further includes performing printing on the recording paper by the print head using the heat generating elements of the calculated number.

    • A thermal head of a thermal printer is provided with an array of parallel connected heating elements and transistors connected in series to the heating elements in one to one relation. In a resistance measuring mode, one of the transistors connected to one heating element whose resistance is to measure is turned on, and other transistors are turned off. In this condition, a capacitor connected in parallel to the heating element is charged up to a predetermined voltage, and then discharged. A counter circuit starts time-counting by a short unit time t0 when a predetermined delay time T min has passed since the start of discharging, and outputs a count Q when the charged voltage goes down to a predetermined level. Based on a discharge time T=T min+t0·Q, the resistance of the heating element is calculated.

    • The present invention provides a method of performing a burn cycle in a thermal printer that reduces printhead switching while increasing printing speed and extending printhead life. In the method, data is loaded into a shift register of a thermal printhead to designate resistive elements that are to be enabled and disabled during the burn cycle. Next, the data is latched into a burn register of the printhead and a power supply of the printhead is activated thereby energizing the enabled resistive elements. New data is then loaded into the shift register. After a short burn period has expired, the new data is latched into the burn register. The steps of loading and latching new data are repeated a predetermined number of times, after which the power supply is deactivated to complete the burn cycle.
