    • Disclosed is an improved serial impact printer which both prints and serrates a document. The printer includes a print wheel which is rotated to position a selected character in front of an anvil. The print wheel includes a wheel-like circular member having print characters at the end of fingers which extend from the top of the print wheel's perimeter. An impact mechanism pressures the selected print character against the anvil, the document being positioned between the selected print character and impact mechanism. The impact mechanism includes a d.c. motor which turns a threaded shaft which is engaged with a threaded hole in the end of a hammer. Counterclockwise motion of the d.c. motor advances the hammer's head to pressure the back of the print character against the anvil, thereby printing and serrating the document with the selected character. Thereafter, clockwise motion of the d.c. motor restores the impact mechanism to its original position.

    • A small sized printer wherein the duration of the print cycle and the sequence of printing operations, during a print cycle, is controlled. The printer includes a plurality of print characters circumferentially disposed therearound, the print characters being selectively positioned in a print position by rotating the print ring from a rest position to a print position during each print cycle. A motor is adapted to be energized to rotate the print rings from a rest position to a print position during each print cycle. The instant invention is particularly characterized by a detection arrangement for detecting the rotary position of the print rings and generating a character selection timing signal representative of each of the rotational positions of the print ring. A print selection arrangement is associated with each of the print rings for selectively positioning same at predetermined print positions during each print cycle in response to the character selection timing signal produced by the detection arrangement being applied thereto. The detection arrangement is further adapted to detect the rotary position of the print rings and generate a reference signal that is distinct from the character position timing signal produced during each print cycle, the motor being utilized to rotatably drive the print rings being deenergized in response to the reference signal being applied thereto.

    • Carrier for type carriers on a type cylinder for a type printing machine as for example a telex or teletype printing machine. The type carriers are biased against the peripheral face of the cylinder by an elastic belt or band, accommodating radial outward movement of the type carriers to make a printing impression and then returning the type carriers to their rest positions after a printing operation. The elastic band may be formed from an elastic belt made from rubber, an elastomer or a like material, which may extend through apertured portions of the type carriers to retain the type carriers to the type cylinder. The belt may also be in the form of a relatively wide flat band having uniformly spaced apertures extending therethrough, and forming a means to accommodate buttoning of the type carriers to the band.

    • A serial printing device comprises a type head mounted rotatably on a carriage which is slidable along a printing line of an office machine. A continuously rotating driving shaft is connected to a differential mechanism which normally transfers the motion to the type head for the selection of the character to be printed. A selectively actuatable electromagnet arrests the rotation of the head in the printing position and simultaneously transfers the motion of the driving shaft to a striking mechanism to effect the printing of the selected character. A positioning element, commanded by the striking mechanism at the actuation of the electromagnet, keeps the head locked during the striking movement and the electromagnet is immediately deenergized. After the striking of the selected character the head is freed by the positioning element and is set in rotation again.

    • A printing device employs a printing drum on the peripheral wall of which a plurality of character type are arranged in the axial direction and in the circumferential direction. The axial movement and rotation of the drum are independently controlled by comparing the position of a new character type on the drum to be printed with that of the immediately preceding one of already printed character type thereon at each printing step in response to electric printing information. A hammer is disposed close to the outer periphery of the drum. The hammer advances step by step in printing in the axial direction of the drum independently of the drum to determine the printing position with respect to a record sheet and selectively strikes the opposed surface of the drum through the record sheet. The printing device can thus attain a mechanical driving system for the drum and hammer which has the simplest construction, the least probability of trouble, and a highest possible printing speed with ease.
