    • One or more nozzles define separate nozzle channels. The nozzles are coupled to a manifold, so that each of the nozzle channels communicates with a different mold gate. A molding material distribution insert is coupled to the manifold and has a body defining a distribution channel and a plurality of drop channels equal in number to the nozzle channels. The distribution channel is an open distribution channel formed on an outer surface of the body and enclosed by the manifold. The drop channels intersect the distribution channel and exit the body at a different one of the nozzle channels. A valve pin bushing can extend into the drop channels. Valve pins can extend from actuators, through the valve pin bushing and the drop channels, and to the mold gates. A valve pin holder can be coupled to the actuator and coupled to heads of the valve pins.

    • A valve gated injection molding system having an elongated valve member with an integral electrical heating element received in each nozzle to provide additional heat. An actuating mechanism engages the rear end of the valve member to reciprocate it between a withdrawn open position and a forward closed position. The valve member has a head which projects rearwardly from the nozzle. The heating element has an external terminal which extends outwardly from the head through a slot in a mounting sleeve. Thus, access for connection of an electrical lead to the moving terminal is provided between the fixed nozzle and the fixed cylinder of the actuating mechanism.

    • An actuator for a valve pin of an injection molding apparatus includes an adjustment piece coupled to a valve pin via a connector and axially movable relative to a piston to adjust an axial position of the valve pin relative to a mold gate. A removable locking device restricts axial movement of the adjustment piece with respect to the piston. An indicator is provided for determining the position of the valve pin relative to a mold gate based on the position of the adjustment piece with respect to the piston. An anti-rotation device is provided to inhibit rotational movement of the valve pin. During maintenance, the actuator piston and adjustment piece may be extracted with or without the valve pin. The actuator may be reassembled with correct axial position via the piston/adjustment piece relationship and correct rotational position of the valve pin via the anti-rotation device.

    • In an injection molding machine, an apparatus for controlling delivery of a fluid material to mold cavities of selectively variable size, shape, volume or configuration, the apparatus comprising a modular mold mounting mechanism having mounting apertures for receiving first and second molds having first and second mold cavities of different size, shape, volume or configuration, the mounting apertures being adapted for ready insertion and ready removal of the first and second molds; a manifold into which fluid material is injected, the manifold having first and second fluid delivery channels through which the fluid material is injected, one channel having an exit aperture communicating with a gate to the cavity of one mold, the other channel having an exit aperture communicating with a gate to the cavity of the other mold; each channel being associated with a drive mechanism which is interconnected to and controls operation of a fluid flow controller which varies flow of the fluid material through an associated channel; a sensor for sensing a selected condition of the fluid material being injected through at least one of the channels or at least one of the mold cavities; and a controller interconnected to each drive mechanism, the controller comprising a computer interconnected to a sensor which receives a signal representative of the selected condition sensed by the sensor, the computer including an algorithm utilizing a value corresponding to a signal received from the sensor as a variable for controlling operation of at least the drive mechanism associated with the at least one channel.

    • This invention relates to a valve gated injection molding system of the type where the melt passage enters the system on general alignment with the valve pin and cavity. The system has a novel valve pin actuating mechanism which is pneumatically operated according to a predetermined timed cycle. A piston which reciprocates in a cylinder has an outer collar portion from which a tongue portion extends inwardly to operatively engage the driven end of the valve pin. The melt passage extends through a portion of the back plate which, in turn, extends through the outer collar portion of the piston and is offset to leave room for the tongue portion of the piston to engage the driven end of the valve pin. Piston rings are located between the piston, back plate and cylinder to prevent excessive air leakage. This center entry system with a pneumatic actuating mechanism provides a more reliable mechanism which may be double acting.
