    • The present invention generally relates to a device which can form a lid for a cup. This apparatus is for thermoforming a plastic sheet of material into a plurality of production sheets. Each sheet has a partible port section, which has integrity against passage of fluid, yet which is partible under mechanical pressure so as to open and allow the passage of fluids. The lid structure with a breakaway port is formed by an apparatus including an oven for heating the production piece, mold assembly that has a mold formed as a female cavity with a plurality of grooves formed around the cavity surface and a pressure box assembly that has an open position and a closed position. The breakaway port in the lid structure is formed as a female cavity with accordion-like grooves therearound which expand to engage the outside of the straw. This eliminates escape of the fluid through the breakaway port when the straw is inserted.

    • Thermoforming apparatus and methodology is provided to form a breakaway port in a molded piece, such as a container lid. The apparatus includes a forging assembly that has a punch element and a striker assembly, so that a material blank that is heated to a plastic state by an oven may be advanced therebetween. When the thermoforming mold closes, a striker element and the punch element come together with a striking force so that a portion of the blank is forced against a male profile on the punch element to forge the port by forming lines of reduced thickness that are partible under mechanical force but which normally maintain the integrity of the molded piece against the passage of fluids. The striker element can be adjustably spring biased and can be mounted, for example, to the pressure box of the thermoforming mold while the punch element is positioned on the mold assembly that provides the mold configuration for the piece to be formed. When the thermoforming mold closes, the restorative force of the spring provides the striking force. The male profile is provided by ribs having a truncated triangular cross-section that provides the necessary geometry to create partible lines without severing the material of the production blank. The apparatus can perform a continuous cyclical process, and a trimming assembly can cut the molded pieces from a contnuous sheet of material advanced through the thermoforming mold.

    • Method and apparatus for separating a bundle of blank pieces from a stack of sheets. The apparatus has a frame and a subframe which pivots with respect to the frame. The frame and subframe each have a clamp for clamping the stack of sheets along a stack plane and the bundle portion to be separated from the stack along a separation plane that intersects the stack plane. The subframe pivots with respect to the frame, bending the stack to cause the bundle portion to be separated from the remainder of the stack in such a way that separation is initiated at one point along the stack rather than across the whole stack or across an entire sheet of the stack. The subframe pivots about an axis that is skewed with respect to at least one of the planes to produce the described effect. Pressure sensors are included to detect the pressure being applied to the stack of sheets to ensure that sufficient force is applied to hold the stack steady in tension during the pivotal motion of the subframe, and yet avoid damage to the stack by the clamps.

    • An apparatus and method for manufacturing partially cut (semi-converted) products in continuous roll form has input feeds for supplying a continuous web of material and a continuous transport web in parallel, feed rollers for incrementally advancing the two webs together to a cutting station where product units are partially cut in successive increments in a continuous strip, a scrap remover, and a station for winding up the cut product strip. The webs are unwound and the cut product strip is wound via dancer bars maintaining constant tension. The input webs have a width which is a multiple of the width of the product units so that multiple strips can be formed simultaneously. The invention is used to form semi-converted, micro diskette liners having connecting portions and indented cutouts marking the boundaries between units. The cutouts are overcut in one direction and also in an intersecting direction to obtain complete cuts despite slight variations in registration.
