    • Cutting apparatus for cutting material, the apparatus comprising two blades arranged so that in use together they can effect a cutting operation in a cutting region therebetween, the blades being mounted relative to one another so that they are urged together in the cutting region as a result of a cutting force initiated by the cutting operation. In one embodiment at least one of the blades is mounted for pivotal movement about a pivot axis so that during the cutting operation the cutting or shearing force generated causes the blade to be pivotally urged towards the other blade. In another embodiment one blade is a rotatable cutter blade and the other blade is a further cutter blade which is adapted to cooperate together to perform the cutting operation in a cutting region, the further cutting blade being mounted so as to be urged towards the rotatable blade as a result of the cutting or shearing forces generated during the cutting operation.

    • A cutting implement such as of the scissors type is disclosed herein, having a pair of elongated shanks pivoted together midway between their opposite ends so that opposing blade cutting edges converge together as the shanks are closed towards one another. The cutting edges are carried on an exposed edge marginal region of either permanent or replaceable blades disposed into open receptacles on the respective shanks. Each shank receptacle is defined by sloping surfaces at the opposite ends of each receptacle and a pair of stepped posts is provided in spaced apart relationship between the opposite opening ends. A replaceable blade is formed with a plurality of recesses along the edge opposite to the cutting edge leading into longitudinal slots whereby the shank posts are indexed or registered with the blade recesses for snap-lock retention therewith into the slots with the blade seated on the post steps. A permanent blade is provided with shaped holes for placement on the steps of the posts. A cover having shaped holes is placed on the step of the posts and between the opposite shaped ends of the recess. The cover is welded at the ends to the shank and to the posts. The replaceable blade may be composed of spring steel while the permanent blade may be of ceramic composition.

Extraction mechanism is provided for automatic blade removal wherein the rearmost corners of the blades cooperate together when the scissor shanks are converged to forcibly urge the blades out of snap-lock retention.

    • A pair of straight pattern snips is provided which is designed to be employed for performing a cutting operation on an article. The snips consist of a pair of integral members, one having a left-hand configuration and the other a right-hand configuration. The pair of members are operatively connected together by means of a pivot bolt so as to be capable of pivotal movement relative to each other. Each of the members includes a handle formed at one end thereof and a jaw at the other end thereof. The grips, i.e., ears with which the handles are provided are skewed or rotated from the plane of the handles to provide a more comfortable grip or hold of the snips for the user. The snips are further provided with detachable blades. The latter blades are mounted on the jaws in blade pockets, i.e., recesses formed in the latter jaws for this purpose through the use of conventional fasteners. The working load is transferred from the blade to the jaw through contact of the back of the blade with a projection or ledge which defines one side of the aforementioned blade pocket with which each jaw is provided. The blade set, i.e., the wiping action of the blade is obtained by inclining the blade pad surface of the jaw which forms the bottom of the blade pocket. By virtue of the aforedescribed inclined angular disposition of the blade, contact between the blades of the snips as the latter is moved to its closed, i.e., cutting position takes place from the outer end, i.e., the tip of the blades to the inner ends thereof.
