    • A spiral-flow barrel finishing machine having a cylindrical stationary barrel and a rotary barrel closed at the bottom thereof includes an escape layer or air layer is provided between the inner side of the metallic wall of the stationary barrel and the outer side of a lining layer being formed thereon and for allowing for the outwardly thermal expansion of the lining layer. Specifically, the escape layer is provided over a specific area between the inner side of the metallic wall of the stationary barrel and the outer side of the lining layer formed thereon. A method for forming an escape layer that may be used with the machine of the above type is also disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing means for detaching a lining layer to be formed, the detaching means extending over the specific upper and lower area on the inner side of the metallic wall of the stationary barrel facing the small gap between the stationary and rotary barrels, forming the above-mentioned lining layer on the inner side of the metallic wall of the stationary barrel, and forming an escape layer on the portion where the detaching means is provided.

    • An improved dry barrel finishing machine is described, in which a mass consisting of media and workpieces is flowed in the barrel of the machine for abrasive finishing of the workpieces and in which air suction is used to remove dust resulting from the finishing operation and to cool the barrel and the mass. The mass is flowed by rotation of the barrel by a motor or through the vibration of the barrel by a driving mechanism. Air inlets and outlets are provided in the barrel. An air suction device draws air through the barrel and around the workpieces and media during the finishing operation. The drawn out air picks up dust and media particles resulting from the abrasive finishing operation and cools the media and the barrel.

    • Apparatus and method for surface finishing of parts or workpieces by attrition, in the presence of a liquid vehicle, with loose, comminuted, granular, or particulate solid finishing material or media, comprising relatively large finishing particles, i.e., chips, is described. The apparatus comprises a finishing chamber having a containing surface comprising an upstanding wall and a bottom symmetrically arranged about a common axis, being relatively rotatable about said axis, and having apposed closely-spaced surfaces, with a resilient seal having correspondingly apposed elements therebetween, the apposed elements of said seal being in closely-spaced apart or touching relationship and the surface of at least one of said apposed seal elements being irregular. The bottom, e.g., is adapted to rotate about the common axis and thus to impart motion to the contents of the chamber and impell them radially outwardly by centrifugal force, thereby also building up a liquid pressure head along the outer edge areas of the finishing chamber bottom. The spacing and irregularities in the apposed seal elements provide communication between the chamber and the exterior, and said spacing and irregularities are of a size sufficient to permit outflow of liquid vehicle under the said head of liquid pressure, including fine abrasive, metal, or like material ("fines") which may be entrained therein, but insufficient to permit passage of workpieces and finishing chips.
