    • A tool insert blank including first and second major surfaces and a plurality of edge surfaces defining an outer perimeter of the blank. A first layer defines the first major surface and a first portion of the plurality of edge surfaces proximate the first major surface. A second layer harder than the first layer is disposed substantially co-extensive with the second major surface and a second portion of the plurality of edge surfaces proximate the second major surface. At least one of the edge surfaces includes a projecting portion defining a first engagement plane and a recessed portion spaced inwardly of the engagement plane whereby the grinding wheel is engageable with the projecting portion without engaging the recessed portion. The second layer can be formed out of various materials including polycrystalline diamond and cubic boron nitride materials. A method of forming a tool insert blank is also disclosed.

    • A fixture apparatus and system. The fixture apparatus includes a base plate. A clamp block extends from the base plate and has a clamp surface disposed at a first angle from the top surface of the base plate. A locator block extends from the base plate and includes a locator surface disposed opposite the clamp surface of the clamp block. An alignment means is provided for aligning the workpiece relative to the locator surface of the locator block. A clamp wedge is disposed between the clamp surface and the locator surface. The clamp wedge includes a drive shaft, a bearing surface and a wedge surface disposed at a second angle relative to the bearing surface. The second angle of the wedge surface is complimentary to the first angle of the clamp surface such that the wedge surface is substantially parallel to the locator surface. A drive means is provided for extending and retracting the clamp wedge. When the clamp wedge is retracted, the clamp surface applies both a downward force against the work piece, which pushes the workpiece against the alignment means, and a lateral force against the work piece, which pushes the workpiece against the locator surface of the clamp block, effectively securing the workpiece in the desired position.

    • In an indexable insert having wide sides, inclined narrow sides are to be ground, that is to say the grinding allowance 38 is to be removed. To this end, the indexable insert is set in rotation about a driven axis of rotation between a clamping insert and a thrust bolt. Serving for the grinding is a grinding wheel which rotates about rotation axis and which has a circumferential surface 18a contoured in a circular shape and having a largest diameter and is composed of a leading region and a trailing region. The grinding wheel is guided relative to the indexable insert along the geometrical defining line which is formed by the generating line of the finished narrow side in the feed direction. The leading region tapering forwards effects preliminary grinding of the narrow side by longitudinal grinding, whereas the trailing region effects finish grinding by linear contact with the narrow side. The grinding wheel is held with the clamping flanges on a grinding spindle. The grinding operation is effected with controlled movement of the driven axis of rotation, a first displacement axis, a second displacement axis and a pivoting movement of the grinding wheel relative to the indexable insert according to double arrow.
