    • An advanced memory type profiling control method for a machine tool including a tracer which is relatively moved along a surface of a model and a machine body provided with a cutting tool such as an end mill whereby a work having the same shape as that of the model is made, includes driving the tracer along the model surface with the tracer preceding the machine body by a predetermined time, sampling coordinate data of a position of the tracer and data of displacement of a stylus, which is moved in contact with the model surface, to the tracer at a predetermined sampling time, calculating coordinate values of points on a locus formed by a movement of a central point of the stylus ball on the basis of the sampled data, calculating a coordinate value of a point following the central point of the stylus ball at retard, for each sampling time to obtain a command position data to the machine body, storing the command position data in a memory successively, and supplying the stored data to a drive control unit of the machine body successively with a predetermined delay time after storing the data.

    • In a system which performs tracer control through the use of a displacement signal of a tracer head tracing the surface of a model, there is provided: a first coordinate conversion circuit in which signals representative of the cosine and sine of the azimuth angle of the feed axis in the X-Y plane of a mechanical coordinate system and X- and Y-axis displacement signals of the tracer head are respectively multiplied by multipliers and the output signals from the multipliers are added together to thereby obtain a displacement component signal of the feed axis; and a second coordinate conversion circuit in which a signal for controlling the feed rate in the feed axis and the signals representative of the cosine and sine of the azimuth angle of the feed axis are respectively multiplied by multipliers to obtain feed rates along the X- and the Y-axis. By controlling the feed rates in the X- and the Y-axis direction with the output signal from the second coordinate conversion circuit, the feed axis in the mechanical coordinate system may be chosen at will.

    • A tracer mechanism having a stylus to scan the surface of a pattern or a template and to cause a congruent relative movement of a cutter and a workpiece, whereby to reproduce the contour of the pattern or template in the workpiece. The stylus is provided with an axial force element which can adjustably vary the endwise thrust of the stylus, thereby to vary the reaction force of the stylus against the workpiece. As a consequence, the stylus can be caused more accurately to track the pattern or template along a tracing plane, especially on a pattern which has a steep slope that tilts laterally relative to the tracing plane. Means is also disclosed to utilize the axial force element in a machine tool table control wherein a "box-cycle" movement is made in which the cutting tool is withdrawn from the workpiece, is stepped to a new tracing plane, and is returned in a non-cutting motion to the starting point of a subsequent cutting movement parallel to the first one.

    • A control for a profiling machining tool, and a method for controlling such a tool. The machine tool includes a sensing head which moves along a template or pattern to produce a signal that causes motors relatively to shift a cutting tool and a workpiece so as to duplicate in the workpiece the profile of the template or pattern. Two sinusoidal signals are generated as a consequence of stylus deflection along orthogonal axes. They are combined to form a single sinusoidal signal which is then variously processed to produce an error signal which causes the motors to operate in directions which tend to reduce the error signal, and to cause the stylus automatically to move along the profile while doing so.

    • Apparatus and method for cycling elements of a tracer mechanism-controlled machine tool in a trace cut along a selected tracing plane defined by first and second mutually perpendicular axes under control of two power control means respective to the selected axes, and at the end of the trace cut, selecting a pick plane for pick movement, which pick plane includes one of the previously-selected axes and a third axis which is normal to the first and second axes, accomplishing the pick movement under control of two power control means respective to the axes which define the pick plane, and after distance measuring means has indicated completion of a predetermined travel along the third axis, to terminate the pick movement and again select the first two selected axes for a trace cut in a direction opposite to the first trace cut. Machine tool elements are moved by motor means responsive to the power control means. During the trace cut and pick movements, the motors are always under the concurrent control of two stylus-responsive power control means which are respective to tracer stylus deflection in the axes that define the respective plane. A substantially constant cutting speed is therby produced both during the trace cut and during the pick movement.
