    • In order to manufacture parts with an outer profile, a workpiece 32 is pressed by a pressure piece 24 through a ring-shaped cutting tool 34. The cutting tool 34 has a plurality of disks with inner cutting edges 62 for removing material from the workpiece 32. The cutting edges are progressively longer in the advance direction, so that each cutting edge removes material chips and the last cutting edge in the advance direction corresponds to the desired outer profile of the part. In order to improve chip removal, the chip chambers 74 located between the cutting edges communicate with the outside through radial connection openings 128 which are distributed all around their circumference. To hold the workpiece 32 securely on the pressure piece 24, a pressure pad 76 extends through the cutting tool 34 and is supported on the side of the workpiece 32 opposite to the pressure piece 32, and a hydraulic piston 80 generates a compression force on the pressure pad 76. To ensure a high dimensional accuracy, a calibrating tool with a passage whose dimensions at the rear outlet side correspond to the set dimensions of the part to be manufactured is arranged behind the cutting tool.

    • A machine for broaching external gears comprising a frame, a pot broaching tool positioned with its axis vertical at the upper portion of the frame, a piston and cylinder device with its axis vertical located directly beneath the pot broach. The gear blank is positioned directly above a work support carried by the piston and is pushed upwardly through the pot broach to a position of clearance above. The cutting teeth of the broach are of course directed downwardly and each cutting tooth has a chip receiving space directly beneath it into which chips are formed during the broaching operation and from which chips are displaced for downward discharge.

    • A blind spline broaching machine for machining splines as well as sprockets, keyways, gears, cams and contours on workpieces, such as shafts. The blind spline broaching machine of the preferred embodiment has dual rams reciprocable relative to a rotary dial. The rams hold a corresponding pair of workpieces, while the rotary dial supports one or more broaching tools. The rotary dial is rotatable to index the workpieces to and from the rams. The blind spline broaching machine also incorporates a part moving unit on its periphery, which enables the use of a single loading/unloading station at which workpieces are alternately loaded onto and unloaded from the rotary table. Because the workpieces are loaded and unloaded from the same location on the periphery of the blind spline broaching machine, the side of the blind spline broaching machine opposite the loading/unloading station remains open to permit ready access to the tooling and the interior structure of the blind spline broaching machine. In addition, only one conveyor system is required to transport workpieces to and from the blind spline broaching machine. As a result, the complexity of and the floor space required for the blind spline broaching machine is substantially reduced.

    • A broaching machine broaches a multiplicity of generally flat work pieces having a projection at only one side, which are advanced in a single file with the projections extending in the same direction. In order to broach the work pieces in stacked pairs in which the peripheries of the work pieces are continuous, rather than spaced apart by confronting projections, half of the work pieces are inverted and a pair consisting of one inverted work piece and one work piece which has not been inverted are stacked together and presented to a pot broach which broaches the peripheries of both work pieces of the pair in continuous cutting strokes. The finished work pieces are advanced away from the broaching station in stacked condition and are separated into two groups, one of which consists of the bottom work pieces of the pair and the otherconsists of the top work pieces of the pair. This places all work pieces in the same orientation with respect to the lateral projection. The work pieces are then fed alternatively into a single file conveyor.
