    • An electromagnetic pump for use in a pressure-feed device for feeding molten metal from a furnace to a casting machine includes a core protection tube housing a cylindrical core of ceramic for protecting the core from erosion by contact with molten metal, a duct accommodating the core protection tube with a space defined between the duct and the core protection tube, and a coil disposed around the duct and energizable for generating a moving magnetic field to feed molten metal filled in the space. The core protection tube is supported in the duct by a pair of support members having confronting end faces, respectively, fitted in the respective opposite ends of the core protection tube for holding opposite ends of the core.

    • A liquid metal electromagnetic flow control device for controlling liquid metal flow through a nozzle orifice includes an alternating current electromagnetic coil disposed adjacent the nozzle and surrounding the orifice therein, and a nonconductive structure disposed along a portion of the coil and occupying an axial portion of the nozzle orifice and leaving an adjacent portion of the nozzle orifice unoccupied. The coil is operable to produce a magnetic field being axially directed and eddy currents being azimuthally directed within the nozzle orifice and the liquid metal flowing therethrough. The structure defines eddy current flow regions and eddy current nonflow regions through the occupied portion of the orifice. The eddy current nonflow regions are positioned relative to said eddy current flow regions thereof so as to substantially block production of eddy currents in the liquid metal as the metal flows through the eddy current nonflow regions. Such blockage reshapes the magnetic field within the orifice at a region of transition therewithin between the eddy current flow and nonflow portions of the orifice to have a radially directed component which produces a substantially axially directed electromagnetic pumping force in the nozzle which controls the flow of liquid metal therethrough be either impeding or assisting the liquid metal flow.

    • Described is a method of controlling an electro-magnetic molten metal pouring device which comprises an electro-magnetic pump which is adapted to generate a traveling magnetic field by a.c. excitation thereby to impart impellent force to molten metal present inside the pump, a molten metal reservoir located on one side of the pump, and a nozzle positioned on the other side of the pump; wherein supplying of molten metal to the molten metal reservoir is started and stopped respectively by detecting the lower limit level and the upper limit level of molten metal present in the molten metal reservoir, and pouring of the molten metal into a mold is started and stopped respectively by detecting the arrival of the mold and the molten metal fullness in the mold. In addition, disclosed is a method of controlling a molten metal pouring operation; wherein the final exciting voltage of said electro-magnetic pump in the preceding molten metal pouring operation is memorized, and the exciting voltage thereof is gradually raised up for a subsequent molten metal pouring operation, said memorized final exciting voltage in the preceding molten metal pouring operation being regarded as the initial exciting voltage for the subsequent molten metal pouring operation.
