    • The present invention discloses an apparatus for direct chill casting of metal comprises an open ended mold cavity formed by a casting surface with an upper end and a lower end, a refractory sleeve located at the upper end of the mold cavity being adapted to receive molten metal, a coolant delivery system below the lower end of the mold for supplying coolant to chill the descending hot metal body, and a boron nitride ring mounted between the refractory sleeve and the peripheral wall of the mold cavity. In another embodiment, the apparatus for direct chill casting of metal further includes a downspout instead of a refractory sleeve that is located at the upper end of the mold cavity being adapted to receive molten metal having a flow control rod or a floating baffle where the flow control rod controls the amount of molten metal to enter the mold cavity. In a further embodiment, a process for the direct chill casting of a metal comprising the steps of continuously filling the upper end of the cavity with molten metal and permitting the molten metal to move downwardly through the mold to form an ingot, and simultaneously chilling the ingot by spraying coolant on the ingot from the coolant delivery system is provided.

The mold surrounds a function ring toward the bearing surface of the mold which, together with the parting agent distributor, forms function surfaces with adjustable roughness on the surfaces. In the parting agent distributor, radial channels are formed at the upper side and the underside, the channel cross sections at the upper side and the underside being in a ratio of 1:3 to 1:5 to one another.

    • A mold for horizontal casting of molten metal comprising a mold body forming an open-ended mold cavity having an inlet end and an outlet end. An annular permeable wall member is mounted in the mold body adjacent the inlet end of the mold cavity with an inner face thereof forming an interior face of the mold. A refractory transition plate is mounted at the inlet end of the mold cavity, this transition plate providing a mold inlet opening having a cross-section less than that of the mold cavity. This provides an annular shoulder at the inlet end of the cavity. Means are provided for feeding molten aluminum through the inlet opening. Separate conduits are also provided for feeding a gas into the shoulder and via the permeable wall means for providing a layer of gas between the metal and the inner face of the mold. A gas that is more reactive with molten aluminum is fed into the shoulder and a less reactive gas is fed via the permeable wall. The reactions with the molten aluminum create a skin or shell on the aluminum which provides smooth passage through the mold and allows for more rapid secondary cooling of the emerging ingot.

    • Device in connection with a water-cooling system for direct chill semi-continuous casting equipment for casting metal, in particular casting aluminium ingots (14). The solution comprises one or more chills (9) arranged in a frame structure with an integral water distribution box (18). The chill(s) comprise(s) a mould chamber surrounded by permeable wall elements (10) for the supply of oil and/or gas and is(are) open at the top with an opening (13) for the supply of molten metal and, at the start of each casting operation, is(are) closed at the bottom by means of a mobile support. The metal is cooled in two stages, by primary cooling in the mould chamber and secondary cooling by direct water cooling immediately below the primary cooling area. A separate cooling circuit called the recooling circuit is arranged to cool the chills after the end of the casting cycle. The recooling (1, 2, 3) and secondary cooling (11, 19) thus consist of two separate cooling circuits. The recooling circuit comprises one or more cooling ducts (3) in the chill wall with supply and outflow pipe systems (1 and 2). The secondary cooling circuit comprises a water distribution chamber (11) which is connected to all the chills (9) of the equipment and which distributes water to drilled holes or a water distribution slit (19) around the circumference of the chill.

    • The invention concerns the adjustment of the linear distribution of an injected shearing fluid, during casting, through a slot (20) provided in the cooled metal body (1)—refractory riser block (14) interface of an ingot mold for continuous metal casting charge and emerging along said ingot inner periphery, the latter being provided with clamping means for adjusting the slot thickness. The invention is characterized in that it consists in “cold” injecting through said slot (20) a regulating inflammable fluid, which is ignited on its exit from the slot, and in acting on the clamping means (25, 26, 28, 29) such that the height of the flames (39) coming out of the slot (20) is substantially constant along the whole ingot inner periphery. The invention provides the advantage of an accurate and lasting adjustment of the injected flow rate without requiring the adjustment of the injection slot thickness. The invention is applicable to continuous steel charge casting in particular.
