    • A mandrel assembly has a mandrel, a biasing member, and a outer member. The biasing member biasly maintains the outer member in a first position, which corresponds to a contoured portion of the mandrel, when the outer member is either on the access or the blind side of a workpiece. The biasing member is compressible to allow the outer member to move into a second position as the outer member is moved through an opening in the workpiece. In the first position, the outer member includes a maximum outer circumference that is larger than the opening of the structural workpiece. In the second position, the outer member includes a maximum outer circumference that fits within the opening of the structural workpiece.

    • Pneumatically powered expansion rivet applicator tools. Each of the tools described herein comprise a rigid body adapted to be manually grasped by the user. First and second pneumatic cavities are housed within the body. Pneumatic coupling means associated with the body supply high pressure air to the first cavity. A fitting associated with the body receives the cylindrical shank of an expansion rivet to be installed by the tool. Fluid flow passageway means interconnect the first and second cavities, and an internal valve permits passage of high pressure air through the passageway between the first and second cavities. Piston means are slidably disposed within the second cavity, and, in response to pressurization of the second cavity, virtually instantaneously contacts associated firing pin means to forceably ram the expansion rivet shank, thereby installing the rivet. In the best mode a tubular handle which is coaxial with the body is moved axially with respect thereto for selectively activating the air valve means to subsequently initiate piston and thus firing pin actuation.

    • The invention relates to a blind rivet and a device for placing said rivet. The blind rivet contains a rivet head with a collar at one end and a rivet tip at the other. The rivet body contains a cavity in the form of a bore in a sleeve section. As with other blind rivets, the blind rivet is inserted into an opening in two sheets that are to be joined together, until the collar comes to rest on the upper face of the upper sheet. In a second step, the part of the rivet body or the rivet head that lies on the rear face of the two sheets is deformed with the aid of a hammer or expanding body, which is advanced with a percussive-type action in the same direction. A device for placing a rivet of this type contains a part that can be pushed forwards with a percussive-type action, said part consisting of a hammer for exerting pressure on the expansion body.

    • Blind fastener of the type having a tubular outer member with a head at one end and a conical portion at the other end, the conical portion having its apex within the outer member. The conical portion is expanded radially to form a second head on the fastener for securing it in place. The member selected for expanding the conical portion comprises a spring pin. In some embodiments novel apex contacting means are interposed between the spring pin and the apex of the conical portion. The apex contacting means is either formed integrally with one end of the spring pin or as a separate piece disposed between the spring pin and the apex of the conical portion. One important advantage of using a spring pin as the setting means is that its resilience retains it within the outer member despite vibrations, temperature changes, or other conditions which might tend to dislodge the setting means. Other advantages are lighter weight and greater strength at no more cost than previous solid setting pins.

    • A hand-held manually-operable tool is disclosed for installing a two-piece expandable plastic fastener (including an expandable body and an insertable pin) in a panel hole. The tool comprises a hand-held housing having a hollow barrel from which a spring-biased hollow plastic sleeve projects. A pushrod within the hollow sleeve is movable with the housing. The sleeve tip releasably engages and supports either the body or pin of a fastener manually mounted thereon and aligns the pin with the pushrod which subsequently forces the pin into the body to effect expansion. The sleeve tip end has either resiliently flexible legs to engage the body or resiliently flexible compressible foam rubber strips to engage the pin. In use, the tool directs the body into the panel hole and is pressed to cause the sleeve to retract so that the pushrod can force the pin into the body to effect body expansion. Thereafter, the tool is moved away from the panel to allow the sleeve to re-extend from the tool barrel and disengage from the fastener. Sleeves of different sizes are provided. A hollow adapter member for the sleeve and an extension member for the pushrod enable a sleeve to handle different sized fasteners. A trigger-operated latch member engages the sleeve to prevent premature sleeve retraction.
