The controller controls a gas volume input to the glue conduit. The gas conduit is connected with the controller and the injector. The dispensing head is connected with the glue conduit for dispensing glue. The heat sink assemble defines a through hole connecting the gas conduit and the glue conduit. The glue dispenser maintains the glue conduit at a stable temperature.

    • A tool is provided for applying adhesive material to a surface. The tool utilizes a cartridge of heat-softenable, thermoplastic material which is positioned in a chamber of the tool. Air under pressure at the rear end of the chamber is applied directly to the rear of the cartridge to urge it toward a heat block located at the forward end of the chamber. That portion of the adhesive material in contact with and near the heat block is softened and flows through passages in the block and past a check valve to a nozzle from which the softened adhesive is directed to the surface. The heat block has a plurality of radially-extending fins which are designed to concentrate heat at the center of the cartridge. The tool features a sleeve of plastic material in the cartridge chamber adjacent the heat block, which sleeve is isolated from the rear portion of the chamber to minimize the conduction of heat toward the rear. The chamber also has three annular, resilient seals therein which separate the air applied to the rear of the cartridge from the forward portion of the chamber with the rear seal also serving as a guide to maintain the adhesive cartridge in proper alignment in the chamber. The chamber has a vent located between the forward two seals through which air passes when the rear end of the cartridge is moved forwardly between these two seals. This serves as a warning to the operator to insert a new cartridge. The new adhesive tool also is equipped with improved heat controls.

    • A hot melt adhesive applicator for receiving a continuous solid rod of adhesive hot melt material and dispensing said adhesive material in molten form. The applicator has a hot melt adhesive heated reservoir at one end of which is a ball spring nozzle assembly for discharging molten adhesive. A tubular canal means interconnects with the reservoir for passing a solid, continuous, elongated, hot melt adhesive rod forwardly to the reservoir and preheating the rod during passage. A split tube is aligned with the canal and reciprocal gripping means act within the split tube to grip a periphery of the solid rod and push it toward the reservoir. A reciprocal motion of the gripping means moves the gripping means away from the reservoir without substantially moving the rod but moving it only slightly rearwardly to relieve pressure in the reservoir. A stop means coacts with the gripping means to prevent substantial movement of the rod during return action of the gripping means. An insulating handle mounts the device for portable use. The gripping means is preferably actuated by pneumatic pressure through at least one double acting air cylinder.

Air under pressure is applied directly to a rear portion of the cartridge to urge it toward a heat block located at a forward end of the chamber. That portion of the adhesive material in contact with and adjacent the heat block is softened and flows through a central discharge passage in the block and past a check valve to a nozzle from which the softened adhesive is directed to a surface to be bonded. The heat block is designed to apply more heat to a central portion of the forward end of the cartridge than to a peripheral porton, in order to promote flow of the heat-softened material toward the discharge passage from the peripheral portion of the cartridge.
