    • A process for the desalinization of sea water which includes a barrier buried to a depth below the low tide water level in a sandy beach, and a collector vault or well buried in the beach behind the barrier, the well having an opening in its side for receiving water passing through the barrier. The barrier is filled with selected filter materials, and the sand in the area between the barrier and the well is treated with a selected material. The barrier extends through a water-permeable layer of crushed or fossilized shells naturally occurring beneath the sandy beach. The well opening is positioned within this shell layer. After a period of pumping, desalinated water will appear in the well and may be pumped out of the well. Whenever the water in the well is pumped below a particular level, a new supply of desalinated water will flow in through the opening in its side from the barrier.

    • A method for removal of at least one contaminant from a liquid is described, wherein a first step in liquid is introduced into a first of a plurality of liquid treatment containers and brought into contact in a liquid-medium suspension with a first quantity of a solid contaminant recovery medium for removing the contaminant for a period of time sufficient to achieve a desired efficiency of recovery of the contaminant. The liquid is then cycled from the first liquid treatment container sequentially through each of the plurality of liquid treatment containers to a final liquid treatment container while contacting the liquid in each of the liquid treatment containers with additional quantities of the medium in liquid-medium suspension for periods of time sufficient to achieve the desired efficiency of recovery in each of the liquid treatment containers. At least a portion of the medium is cycled from the final liquid treatment container through the plurality of liquid treatment containers to the first liquid treatment container in a direction countercurrent to flow of the liquid so as to maintain essentially a constant medium concentration in each of the liquid treatment containers, with the medium being substantially separated from liquid prior to cycling from one container to another container. At least a portion of the medium is transferred from the first liquid treatment container into a medium recycling means, in which the medium is treated with a contaminant recovery liquid for regenerating the medium.

    • A unit is disclosed for removal of impurities present in liquids such as waste water effluent. The unit comprises a vessel containing a loose quantity of particulate treating material for absorption or reaction with the impurities in the liquid. A wall of the unit has multiple small openings therein, each of the openings filled with a finely-divided, compacted, particulate filter material such as diatomaceous earth which is retained in the openings by one or more layers of a woven inert material such as nylon or polyester having mesh openings sufficiently small to prevent passage of the particulate filter material therethrough. The woven material is secured over the outer surface of the openings in the wall of the vessel. Means are mounted within the vessel to progressively sweep over the inner surface of the wall just out of contact therewith and over the openings in which the particulate filter material is retained to remove impurities lodged thereon and prevent blinding of the filter material by such impurities. The same means also acts to uniformly mix the particulate treating material held within the vessel. The liquid with the impurities removed, because of the pressure differential between the inside and outside of the vessel, passes through the particulate filter material retained in the small openings of the vessel and is discharged from the housing surrounding the vessel. The treating material, once spent, is replaced as necessary.
