    • A waste water treatment system for removing sludge from within a rectangular clarifying tank having a plurality of sludge collector flights attached to a pair of parallel chains for collecting sludge and scum within the waste water. Each of the collector flights includes a non-metallic elongated main body portion having spaced top and bottom walls connected by spaced front and rear walls for defining a hollow, interior cavity. Buoyant foam material is disposed within the interior cavity for increasing the buoyancy of the collector flight. The waste water treatment system further includes plastic bull and drive sprockets mounted to a drive shaft running across the width of the tank, and a chain drive assembly for driving a pair of parallel drive chains attached to the drive sprockets. The drive assembly causes rotation of a drive shaft through a chain link attachment to the bull sprocket. The rotation of the drive shaft causes the rotation of the attached drive sprockets which, in turn, drive the parallel drive chains.

    • An elongated suction header for use in a sludge removal system is mounted transversely on a track guide that is mounted on and driven along a track rail affixed to a floor of a tank in a water treatment facility. As the track guide moves along the track rail, the header is moved transversely to the rail adjacent the floor of the tank. In cross section, the header has a top section that is generally dome shaped and extends from a bottom wall of the header. The ends of the top section overhang beyond or extend below the bottom wall along a longitudinal axis of the header. Inlet orifices are provided in the bottom wall of the header so that sludge is drawn into an inner compartment of the header when vacuum is applied to a vacuum port that extends through the top section of the header into the header compartment. In order to assist in channeling the sludge to the inlet orifices, flow splitters extend from the bottom wall between adjacent pairs of the inlet orifices. In order to equalize the distribution of pressure in the compartment to all of the inlet orifices, baffles extend from the vacuum port on either side of the inlet orifices for two different distances from the central vacuum port to subdivide the header compartment into three interconnected vacuum zones on each end of the header.

    • A floway for cleansing the water of a waterway containing nutrients and other pollutants, utilizing growing attached algal turf, the floway utilizing at least two elongate curbs spaced apart in a parallel relationship. A growing surface for algae is disposed between the curbs, on which growing surface, selected algae are caused to grow and form an algal turf able to bring about bioassimilation of nutrients and pollutants, as well as the physical trapping of particulates contained in water caused to flow over the algal turf. Water from the waterway is directed to flow through the floway and over the algal turf. A mobile harvester is provided for removing mature algal turf containing nutrients and pollutants assimilated and trapped by the algal turf, such harvester being of a width commensurate with the spacing of the curbs, so as to be supported therefrom. The harvester contains a vacuum pickup system, including an intake plenum for harvesting mature algal turf. Advantageously, the harvested algal turf is disposed of without permitting it to reenter the waterway. This floway may be a part of an algal farm made up of a number of floways disposed in a parallel array, with a barge being available to move the harvester from one floway to another, such that the mature algal turf in each floway can be effectively harvested.

    • A flow of liquid containing suspended solid particles enters a top inlet of a setting tank of a liquid-solid separator. The tank is of such dimensions that the liquid flows in a nonturbulent flow path under a lengthwise partition in the tank and through an outlet weir opening formed in the tank on a side opposite the inlet. From the outlet the liquid may be returned for further use in a process. Under the influence of gravity, a substantial portion of the solids in the flow slowly settles downward and collects to form a cake on a movable collection means serving as part of a bottom of the tank. Periodically the movable collection means is advanced toward a discharge point located exterior to the tank for convenient disposal of the solids collected on the movable surface.
