    • An oral appliance system for a human mouth comprises at least one maxillary appliance and at least one mandibular appliance that can be removably anchored to teeth of a maxilla and mandible, respectively. Respective biasing members are carried by the at least one maxillary appliance and the at least one mandibular appliance. When the at least one mandibular appliance is anchored to the human mandible and the at least one maxillary appliance is anchored to the human maxilla of a common jaw, the respective biasing members act between the at least one maxillary appliance and the at least one mandibular appliance to urge the at least one mandibular appliance inferiorly and anteriorly away from the at least one maxillary appliance with a force between about 250 grams at contact and about 1200 grams at contact.

    • A mouthguard includes an integrally molded tray having upper and lower portions joined by a hinge along an inner portion of the tray that defines an open-sided channel gap between the upper and lower tray portions. Shock forces tending to deflect the lower portion of the tray toward the upper portion are countered by a moment resistance of the hinge as the channel gap between the upper and lower tray portions closes. Additional energy absorption is provided by a cushion liner attached to an inner surface of the tray that prevents contact between the upper and lower tray portions, as well as an air cell defined by an occlusal pad attached to the lower tray portion. Embodiments include a detachable tether that is received within a tether mount incorporated within the mouthguard.

    • A performance enhancing and force absorbing mouthguard adapted to fit the upper teeth of the mouth of an athlete wherein the mouthguard is unobstructably tethered and of a composite material. The first internal layer is a nonsoftenable flexible framework which will permit the mouthguard to hold its shape during fitting as well as to absorb and dissipate significant impact conveyed to the upper teeth. A hard, durable bite plate wedge lowers the condyle from the temporomandibular joint in a fulcrum action to place the lower jaw in an optimum condition preventing impingement upon the nerves and arteries as well as spacing the upper and lower teeth apart. Elastomeric traction pads are on the bottom of the mouthguard and are grippingly engaged by the posterior teeth of the lower jaw. While the framework, wedge and traction pads are mechanically interlocked, a softenable material is placed over the mouthguard excepting the contact portions of the traction pads to encapsulate the mouthguard and to permit custom fitting. An anterior tab supports a transverse external bumper having left and right ports to unobstructively tether the mouthguard.

    • The present invention is a mouth guard which is worn to protect a person's teeth when the person is engaged in a sports activity such as football. A strap which has a quick release mating member at each end interconnects the mouth guard with a bar on a helmet worn by the person. One quick release mating member is removably connected to a bar on the helmet and the other quick release mating member is removably connected to a receiving member in the mouth guard. In the event of a collision between participants in the sport which results in the helmet flying off the person's head, one or both of the quick release members will disengage the strap from either the bar on the helmet, the mouth guard, or both to thereby avoid damage to the person's teeth.

    • A vital signs monitor system is integrated with personal protective equipment (“PPE”) so that upon wearing the PPE, the monitor is placed in an operational position to monitor a vital sign. In one embodiment, the vital signs sensor comprises a thermal sensor located at a mouth guard to automatically make operational contact with tissue under the tongue when the mouth guard is worn. A second vital signs monitor comprising reflective pulse oximetry devices senses oxygen saturation and heart rate. Vital signs data are communicated to an RF module located in an associated helmet for transmission to a remote location. A gateway at that remote location receives the transmitted vital signs data and forwards that data to a data collection, organization, and access system that is programmed to make the vital signs data available over the Internet. Medical personnel, coaches, supervisors at the location of the PPE can monitor the vital signs of the wearer by accessing the data collection, organization, and access system with hand held, or portable computing equipment over the Internet.
