    • A needle retraction medical device including a hollow body (10) and a plunger (20). The hollow body (10) has a first end (11) provided with a needle mounting hub (13) and a plurality of releasable latches (15) holding the needle mounting hub (13) against spring (14) bias. The latches (15) are formed integrally with the hollow body (10) and project longitudinally inside the hollow body (10) from a proximal end at or adjacent the first end (11) of the hollow body (10) to a free end. A respective opening (35) is provided in the body (10) radially inwards of each of the latches (15). The plunger (20) has a forward end insertable into the body (10) from a second end thereof, a hollow interior and a closed rear end. The plunger front end is operable, upon insertion of the plunger (20) into the body (10), to deflect the latches (15) radially outwards and thereby release the needle mounting hub (13) from the latches (15) so that the hub (13) together with the needle mounted thereby retract under spring action into the hollow interior of the plunger (20). A respective opening (30) is also provided in the hollow body (10) radially outwards of at least some of the latches (15) so that each such latch (15) connects to the material of the body (10) only at each side of its proximal end.

This translational movement from an injection position, wherein the needle is aligned with the syringe connector, to a retraction position, wherein the needle is aligned with the retraction cavity, allows the needle retraction mechanism to force the needle into the retraction cavity.

    • A barrel adapter mountable to a syringe barrel includes a barrel tip, a biasing member, a locking mechanism, and a needle assembly. A safety syringe includes a barrel, a plunger assembly, and a barrel adapter. The needle assembly includes a needle, a needle hub, and a needle seal. The needle is configured to pass-through the needle assembly, locking mechanism, biasing member, and barrel tip such that, at one end the needle is within the barrel and at another end the needle passes through an aperture in the barrel tip. The barrel may be substantially cylindrical, having along its longitudinal axis a distal end for drug injection, a proximal end for injection control, and at least a portion of the barrel interior for drug containment. The barrel adapter provides needle retraction mechanisms to the barrel to form a safety syringe. Methods of assembling, manufacturing, and using such syringes are also provided.

    • A tamperproof retractable non-reusable syringe has a one piece hollow outer body with a barrel for a slidable plunger, a transition zone and a smaller diameter nose portion. An elongated needle holder and spring combination is installable from the rear of the outer body, guided into the nose portion and held by cooperating inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces oriented in the direction of retraction at the most constricted part of the transition zone where the nose begins. The plunger has an opening with a dislodgable stopper for receiving parts of the retraction mechanism. The stopper and the head of the needle holder are of significantly reduced diameter from the injection fluid chamber to resist blowing out prematurely. In one embodiment the head of the needle holder is surrounded by a separable retainer member which is slidingly removed by contact with the tip of the plunger after the stopper is mostly or fully removed to avoid cumulation of force required for retraction after the injection. In a second embodiment the head of the needle holder is clamped and held by constricting forces imposed by stress on the outer body induced by interference fit. Release occurs by slight expansion on the barrel by contact of the plunger tip with a small internal ramp in the outer barrel. Both embodiments have a plunger cap configured to enter an opening in the outer body to provide an additional tamperproof feature. The retraction cavity is provided with venting structures to assure that all uninjected fluid is retained within the syringe body.
